the idea is if you call someone else who is using Skype it's free for both of you.

the "free until the end of the year" deal is only for Skype to US landlines.

still no big deal, people with sprint can call free after 7pm. and week-end. Also vonage and other VOIP have plans of unlimited calls to certain countries for one low rate.

I see just no benefit of Skype. If you use startec to call India from land line or cell it is just 8 cents and that too 3 sec billing.

Look, no offense I see no reason to have to justify to you why "it's a big deal". Fact is I use to call Germany via skype to skype and it's a free call for both of us and convienent.

Vonage means jack to me if I'm not home or at a computer.

You don't see a benefit in using it, so don't use it. I think it is more than obvious though that there is a market for mobile VOIP despite your arguments.

yep, Skype to Skype (or Yahoo to Yahoo) is free and I believe the connection is great. I also call customers in Japan and do free multi-caller conference calls with people all over the world. It is a convenient tool, IMO. I am even thinking about a Skype In (which includes VM) number for business and then I have a "local" number no matter where I am (as long as I have WiFi connection).

You're right... it depends on the situation. But if the situation is right -- then the rates, convenience, and voice quality can be really great on Skype.

My business and family use it to call Korea and it is around .02/minute... which is excellent. So it works out great for us. The other thing that has got me raving about it is the MAC/PC compatibility. Most instant messaging software isn't really GREAT at voip and webcam operatability is actually a hit or miss case (my experience). Skype just released beta client for the MAC and from the several attempts I've had with it... it's worked flawless.

I really wish a big gun like google would buy out skype, so it gets more exposure. I like their fast development cycle... they keep making it better. SO yea, VOIP from PC -to-PC is great and free... but all the other perks of outgoing calls to any phone in the U.S. (it works for landlines AND cellphones) till the end of this year is great. Hopefully and eventually, the goal is to get lower international rates across the board for voip solutions. :)

It was written up in the NY Times. Doesn't work to every country but it's free. I tried it and it worked great.
