the evdo router should be in stores soon, and is a buy only option, no connection card included for about 250 bucks. it works beautifully and looks just like the newer linksys routers with a slot for the connection card. this option is good for a small businesses and people with incompatible computers and connection cards or slot sizes (desktops, macs, expresscard slots, linux, etc..)
I know a sprint affiliated small business that has been testing it out for the past couple months and it works fine in evdo. remember that connection card plans have changed prices so not the same. the dongle is also good for people on the go with card slots filled up with other stuff and the new tablet pc market that doesnt have a slot but plenty usb.

I've read that the linksys locks you down to only like 4-5 users (I don't have one, so I can't verify for sure). I know that the Kyocera KR-1 (rebranded D-link) doesn't have that limitation (I have one and have had like 20-30 people on it at the same time, thank gawd it was in a PV area). Either one looks good. I'm just glad that I can provide net access via my truck, or during power outages. I've hooked up an external antenna to expand the signal, so it's been working great since I got it (can't remember when, but it was like within the first week of release).

Trav, have you used PAM with this ? How easy is the setup?
The brochure at kyocera.com mentions 'Smooth migration to future 1xEV-DO releases' (currently supports 1xEV-DO ) ... does this mean the upcoming Rev A ?
um yea i'm surprised no one has snagged it from me yet
but heres the link with pics and stuff

the Linksys does not "lock you down" it has 4 ethernet ports and with wifi you can have a large number of people connected

afaik the usb option on the kr1 is pretty useless right now when it comes to PAM

I haven't tried PAM, but I believe all you do is plug your phone in. I could always try it, and see how it works if you'd like (not too hard to do I suppose. If I get a chance, I'll try it out this weekend.
I believe the transition, just means you update your card to a new Rev. A. and the router is good to go. I'll be finding that out next month when I buy the new Sierra card.

You are correct, I misread the info. It stated "comfortably", so I guess it doesn't lock you down.

Let me know about PAM if you get a chance to plug in a phone... Also good to know about Rev A capabilities...thanks

I'm interested in hooking up PAM to the router as well. If it does work, I would like to konw if it would work w/o the PAM plan, but on a PV plan with NAI disabled and the phone dialing #777.

I purchased one from Telesales. I am waiting to get it in. I ordered it with the new Novatel Rev. A card. I wonder how well its going to perform.

I just set-up my Linksys Wirless G Router with the Novatel S720 Rev. A EV-DO data card and let me tell you that I am amazed! I have so far hooked up 3 devices and shared the connection via WiFi. I did a speed test from DSLReports.com (when I had it hooked up to the laptop via PCMCIA) and the test came back at 700kbps! Much faster than my speed while using my Treo 700p as a modem. I hooked up my laptop, a PDA and my TiVo to the network. Works fantastic! I am so glad I got it. Saved me money. I don't have a home phone and don't really need one and didn't really want to pay $50 a month for DSL without a phoneline. Cable internet is too expensive in my area atleast for now. We don't have a good cable company like a Cablevision or Comcast so I decided to go with the Data Card and the Modem. Sure it set me back nearly $400 but since I am an employee the data plan only costs me $15 a month without a contract, that sure as heck beats $50 a month and a 1 yr contact. Not to mention setup and activations fees and equipment costs.

GREAT !
Wait til rev A comes out - smokin baby!
1. what speeds are you getting (Up/Down) with speakeasy.net/speedtest ? Card vs. Treo?
2. are you comparing speeds same time of day (and day of week) as when you test with your Treo directly?

is the accuracy of the speed test off if I am testing it via WiFi vs. direct connetion via PCMCIA? I just ran the speed test, my router is in the kitchen and I am connected via WiFi. The download speed was 503k and the upload speed was 63k. Not the greatest, when I tested the connection yesterday when directly connected via PCMCIA. The download speeds then were 699kbps download and 79kbps upload. But that wasn't through the site you gave me. It was through dslreports.com. I would test the connection with my Treo but I removed the PAM plan so I can't connect. I wish there was a way to know when you are on Rev. A coverage vs Rev. 0 coverage. I guess I will find out when I test it and the upload speeds are better. Other than that I am very satisfied with the service.

I would say w/ wifi it should be comparable (or slight chance a tad slower b/c of router overhead and security turned on (if) ). Try running a speed test using the speakeasy.net/speedtest

The speed test I ran while connected via WiFi was done through Speakeasy. The other test I ran while connected via PCMCIA was done through DSL reports.
