View Full Version : Does anyone actually USE Vision?

Seriously.... Do you use it on a regular basis? And, what for? I just cannot understand the appeal of surfing the internet on a screen the size of your palm. Maybe I'm missing something here? :p

You're looking at the threads on your cell phone?
I just think I would go blind looking at that tiny screen for too long!
Yeah, it's a cool feature and all, but it seems very impractical.
I'm just curious to know what everyone actually does with Vision & how often you use it? Maybe it's an age thing.... I'm 30 (I know that's not old at all), but I'd much rather surf the web from my computer where I don't have to strain my aging eyes... lol

I have been curious about whether or not I should try Vision. But, I honestly don't think I would want to look at the internet on that tiny little screen. Also, trying to click around on the number pad to "type" anything in would drive me crazy!!! I don't see how you guys can "chat" on your cell phone. Do you ever get tired of clicking around on your phone's number pad? It's so much easier to use a keyboard!
Do you guys actually watch television on your cell phone? Man, I'm such an old foggie! I can't watch tv on anything smaller than my Sony HD big screen!
I really think the only thing I would ever use Vision for is Picture Mail. I do think it would be cool to be able to upload my pictures at the press of a button. I wish I could just pay for Picture Mail w/out having to pay for everything else.

SprintUserHere1.. at times.. i feel the same way as you. but there are SO many times having the internet on your phone comes in handy.. i would really miss it. opera mini makes websites look pretty decent.. of course your PC is better.. but i dont always havea PC in front of me... i do leave the house sometimes ;)
specv pretty much hit the nail on the head. having google in your pocket at all times is a great tool.
there are times when my friends ask me to look something up on my phone and i dont feel like tapping on a bunch of keys... so yeah.. sometimes i hate it... but its still oh so worth having.
NightDevil

Well that is a difference also ... i have an older plan which includes picture mail, unlimited internet, txt, and now tv all for like $15 with a $5 credit...
But I have a treo and to be honest when I had a regular phone (about a month ago) I would never se the net since... as you said it was just too small and typing on the keypad was hell... so im with you... unless it doesn't have a treo it just sucks... but i need either the TV or radio to keep my going at work
NightDevil
10-03-2006, 07:56 PM
put it this way... if you can find a reason to use the net then go ahead.... its worth it.. better than 411 when you get lost m.google.com but i say try it for a month ... its atleast that

I use Vision multiple times daily. I get news updates, check my email, visit several message boards and forums. I do Medline searches and drug look-ups while I'm on duty. I also use Mycast for weather info.

I'm 42 and surf the net exclusively on my Treo. I watch MobiTV and send and receive picmails. I Shop Ebay, post here (notice my wireless post count) and at Maximunk.com among others.
If I didn't have vision I really wouldn't see the need for a Treo The ability to get information quickly and correctly is SOOO SWEET!!!.
People that say "I'd rather surf the web on my computer at home (or work)"...well no kidding. Who wouldn't? Vision and the mobile web comes in handy when you're away from a standard web portal and you wish to access the web for any reason. That is how far along the mobile web has come. You can basically check out anything no your phone that you could on your home pc (also thanks to opera mini ;) )
For instance, say you're anywhere but home or work and you wish to access the web...us vision users will turn to our trusty (power)vision handsets. Simple as that.

I guess I can understand it (sort of) if you have a fancy phone - like a Treo. But, I've got to have analog-roaming capability because I travel a lot, and I've got to be sure I'm covered in the boonies. So, I can't use a fancy phone. I've got to stick to old reliable - my Sanyo 3100.

I just got a Katana which is a great improvement over the 4920 I've used for the last two years. Great screen and pretty nice keypad too.

I use vision to check my email, my myspace account and to surf the web, and to download ringers from all the cool free websites. I probably use it several times a day and I might go days without making or recieving a phone call from my phone but I can't go more than a couple of hours without checking my email from my phone if I am not near a computer. It also comes in handy when traveling and your are bored out of your mind sitting in the car while the parents driving from relative to relative to check the email or chat online with AIM
I use PV all the time for email, ebay, weather, useless info, cheating at bar trivia contests;), movie times, look up phone numbers, streaming audio w/ pTunes Delux (that one is really sweet!)

The biggest reason why i am with Sprint is because its internet is cheaper than other carriers. Why do i need internet on a phone? Lets see...maybe i need to know the score of Yanks-Tigers match on the go or maybe i wanna know English Soccer Leage results or i forgot to to pay my phone bill and i will be charge late fee if i dont pay in 45 munites.
What i am trying to say is once you get to know internet on the go you may not be able to live with out it.

Since you travel a lot, I'd think you'd get a lot out of Google maps for mobile, along with possibly a GPS program like telenav.

I love On Demand on my Treo. I even have a couple coworkers that stop by my desk on a regular basis to look up something On Demand-one such as horoscope or strange news. I use it for various little things and it will be great for driving directions. I never used the net on my old phone-with the treo it is much nicer.

I will just say simply, Yes.
Since you want a list sports scores, News BBC Cnet slashdot for starters. Google SMS for a ton of stuff. AIM, getting ringtones and screen savers. Movies show times all the time that is probably the most useful thing there.

Good point... and my last... I travel very often also and usually to differnt airports... so it helps to be able to connect to my laptop through my phone to get to the web. But Im not sure if you can do it with analog

On my old phone, I would use the GPS feature, AIM, Yahoo, checking email, etc. I wouldn't use it everyday, but atleast a couple times a week.
Now I have a Palm Treo 700wx, and I use it daily. I surf the internet, stream music, etc. I don't think I would have this phone if I didn't have the internet with it.

Just out of curiosity... do you guys pay for those extra services? When I 'tried' vision, I noticed that things like messenger, mapquest, etc had a monthly service charge. What's up with that? Oh, and what is the GPS feature? how do you use that & what's it good for.
Thanks for the wealth of information!!!

I am getting to be a certifiable Power Vision addict.
The appeal of using the Web on my phone, although it'll never be as good as a full computer even with Opera Mini, is big.
When I'm bored and waiting for a friend, or just want to surf while in bed/on the couch (I have no laptop and wireless yet) or check my email anywhere, it's great.
And unlike the old 3G phone and service, the speed is definitely acceptable if not great.

No, those are not included in the vision price AFAIK. But why should I need a seperate mapquest fee anyway when I downloaded Google Maps Mobile for free (which is awesome) and IM I have no use for.

I guess my first reply didn't go through. I use Vision all the time, I really do enjoy being able to goto my regular forums and post while i am at work (no computer there). I also use it for checking scores, and my regular D/L'ing of apps/games/ringtones.

Use Vision daily, for many of the same uses already mentioned (411, email, weather, info services, etc), but also: movie reviews and restaurant suggestions. Going to either the video rental store (or less often, the theaters), I'm often wondering whether an interesting looking movie that I've never heard of is worth seeing. A quick lookup on www.imdb.com gives me ratings, reviews, etc while in the store. Similar, evening is coming on and the situation demands a good restaurant idea -- out comes the PDAphone and surfing on Vision for restaurant reviews, one sounds good, highlight the phone number, the reservation is made... So yes, of course I use Vision. Constantly...
A finally scenerio... I'm at BestBuy (or some other store). I'm interested in an item but not sure if the pricing there is particularly good. Out comes the PDAphone, browsing for Internet pricing, or even if its available on ebay for a lot less. Internet on the go (i.e. Vision) is indispensable...

I use Vision for TeleNav GPS (got a free copy off some guy's website), Google Local, Yahoo Mail, and checking scores on ESPN. I usually don't watch TV or Movies, but if I'm bored, it's actually not bad for that too.
But my favorite use of Vision is reading the news while spending quality time on the can.

Check this out as a story showing how useful Vision has become for me:
today I was chatting over the phone with my friend, we were looking for some specific movies to rent from local libraries and it was like a treasure hunt. We were really challenged finding these titles between the two of us.
On my 920 I searched out library listings and catalogs, saw who had the DVDs, got their numbers, called, reserved the movies and later will go pick them up. All outside my house and without wasting time driving all over the place!
Technology is amazing. :D
(Now I wonder if there will ever be phones where I'll be able to talk on them and surf the web at the same time...or do Crackberries already do that? )

YES! I think I use my phone's "intern-ette" more than I do my computer's... I'm getting ready to sink into a pda phone so I can have more real estate, and so I can merge pda, mp3 player, phone/ camera (I actually use my phone camer a lot, too), but I have gotten so used to my tiny little screen, it seems sort of normal!
and yes, I'm over 40. The letters aren't THAT tiny.
I have only regular vision on a Samsung mm-880 that I've had for almost a year now.
My family -- my professional techie [mac-head] partner & 2 teenaged daughters-- hate their phones' wap browsers, but then I *do* have the newest phone, so that probably makes a big difference. The kids love their picture texting (they use it instead of sms-- doesn't deduct from their 100-texts/month budget).
I think the only feature I don't use is the video recorder. It's just never come in handy for me. Oh, and the video-on-demand... when I got this phone last winter, there was very limited "tv" for phones, & I never got that pkg... now, I don't miss it-- have too many other electronic distractions that offer better choice at less cost than what sprint has to offer.

I've always been a heavy Vision user but Opera Mini really has opened up my phone to the web. My A900 screen doesn't seem so small and being over 40, reading glass makes it all look bigger.
