View Full Version : Paying Extra for EVDO?

Hey Gang...
I went from a 650 to a 6700 to the 700p, and have continued with my same rate plan for several years which includes Unlimited Vision.
My 700p started resetting six or seven times a day (with no added programs) I took it in to Sprint last week, and they took it and set up sending me a replacement in the mail.
I figured this was a good time to take a WX out for a spin while I waited for my replacement P.
When I called to activate the W, I was told I would have to agree to a $20/mo. Power Vision plan before they could activate it. I told the CSR that I have had unlimited Vision for years, including on my 6700 and P. She told me that somehow the store must have gotten around it, so to take it in to activate it. Same story at the store. Couldn't activate without paying the extra twenty/month. He said he didn't see how I had not had to pay for it with my P, so I gave up, went home and reactivated my replacement P on the phone with no snags.
I looked online, and my plan shows "Unlimited Vision" still at no extra charge. It operates at EVDO speed, but makes no mention of EVDO or "Power Vision" anywhere on my account.
Am I lucky, or is it possible to have a 700p without PowerVision and still be online? How can I find out if I'm getting EVDO without sending up any red flags?
Take care!

Your phone will automatically use evdo if it is available. They do not do anything on there end that effects you from getting it or not.

You are very wrong full_in54. If you are on a regular vision plan and you buy a powervision phone you must change your data plan to a powervison plan, it is a must. The only way they can do it is if you have no data plan at all, then you don't have to have it. If you have a powervision phone with the old data plan that is a glitch in the system. I recommend keeping what you have. If you go to the store or call customer care, they are going to make you change that data plan if you get another powervison phone.

I'm clinging to my glitch with both hands!
I stopped by my friendly neighborhood Sprint store on my way home today to double check that I wasn't now getting charged for "Power Vision." He said my account makes no mention of POWER vision, it just shows that I have unliminted VISION.
He said he doesn't know how I'm able to have a 700p activated and online without a Power Vision plan, but that I do. He recommended I not mess with a good thing!
So, I'm carting back the WX. I really think I might rather have it, but now that it would cost me an extra $20 a month (or $240 a year!) I think I'm perfectly happy with my 700p!
Thanks for everyone's help, as usual!

I tried activating the 700wx by phone and in the store, and both times they told me the computer would not go any further until I signed up for a $20 Power Vision package.
Where did y'all activate your phones without signing up for the extra service?

um....NO. thats bs. we have 5 lines. all of witch had regualar vision. all of witch are now with powervision phones and we never switched to PV. once again, they CANT MAKE you buy an extra service just because the phone you want is capable. that would be illegal. especially since nowhere in your contract does it state that you must do so. If there are customers out there that were FORCED to buy a power vision plan because they got a PV phone, then that would be a BIG reason for a class action. sprint would NEVER do somthing so stupid. there have already been many threads on this topic and the answer is NO, you do not have to activate powervision because u buy an a900 or mm900 or a920 or any other PV phone. Especially since a LOT of places dont even have power vision access.

I've activated 2 920's, 2 900's, a 700p (x2), a 700wx and ppc 6700 all under my old $85.00 2000 minute plan with free vision. Never had to drop a dime for power vision. I always tell them that I have no interest in the power vision extra's or speed. I advised them that the phone should revert to 1x vision if i don't sign up for power vision. We all know the real deal, but it works.

Hey Duke,
That sounds like the same plan I have (includes two lines I assume also since you do everything in pairs).
I'm going to call again this morning and give it another try!

For what it's worth, I bought my 700wx online from the Palm store (free next day shipping, no sales tax) and called Sprint on the phone and simply said I wanted to do an ESN swap; nothing more, nothing less. I've found that the less you say the better; let them find out it's an EVDO capable phone on their own after they register the new ESN on the network.

BTW, called CS three times today to find out about this. All three reps said that you didnt have to activate powervision just because you got a PV phone. Weather signing up for new service, coming off of a previous vision plan, or just upgrading your phone. Like I said, they CANT make you buy a service just because the phone is capable of it, especially when the phone will revert back to 1x if you dont have power vision on your accout. Next time dont be so quick to tell me I'm "very wrong". Think for a little bit first and use plain old common sense.

Well I got screwed then.on both my mm_9000 and ppc-6700.when I did both ecn swaps..they took my reg vision off.then I got the bill. and I had all kinds of data charges on it...they told me I had to get PV even thought I don't have it in my area. just because of those 2 phones..I feel ripped off now. cause I'm paying 35 extra a month vs the 10 for my old vision. And I don't even use evdo LOL

Hey y'all...
Quick update. I called in again tonight to activate the WX, and this time they did it no questions asked. Woohoo. Hopefully I won't see any unexpected charges on my next statement.
Peace out, and word to your collective mothers.

Dear Mr. Karner,
Thank you for contacting Sprint together with Nextel. I will be happy to assist you regarding buying a power vision phone.
I have checked and found you can keep your basic vision package with your new power vision phone, but if you want to enjoy the power vision features, you need to upgrade into power vision package. I am sure , you are aware of that.
I enjoyed assisting you and look forward to working with you in the future. Have a great day. Thank you.

Question:If you have a basic vision phone with a basic vision package,
do you HAVE to purchase a power vision plan if you buy a
power vision phone such as the samsung a920 or treo 700p/wx?
Or can you just use regular vision since power vison phones
are capable of using the 1x data network?
