This is a generic battery management topic, not another thread about the viability of the A900 battery.

I've heard of a battery management technique that supposedly maximizes battery life. When a rechargeable battery is new, let it fully discharge before recharging it. Repeat this method the first few times the battery is discharged/recharged. Does anyone know whether or not this technique actually maximizes battery life compared to recharging a battery when it's only partially discharged? Thank you.

This method work for ni cad batteries however with the batteries in most modern phones are lithium ion and require no special charging. Just make sure your first charge is on a home charger not a car charger. Car chargers give a rapid charge that will not last as long. A house charger give short bursts so the battery retains a longer charge.

As mac said, that is an old NiCd battery issue. You can use Lithium Ion batteries right out of the box.

Lithium Ion batteries actually benefit more from more frequent charges rather than using them fully/discharing them. Fully discharging Lithium Ion batteries on a regular will actually greatly reduce their lifespan.
