I'm new to the "palm" world of phones, so please bear with me.

When you have a Treo (700p or 700wx), does it come with Outlook already installed and you can receive emails on it.......or does it mean you have to have Outlook set up on my PC at home and it just redirects it to your phone?

Currently, I only use Yahoo! email, so i'm not familiar with what they mean about syncing with Outlook. I was under the impression you could create a "Treo Palm" email address and it if you gave it out to people and they used that email, it would go to your phone.....is this correct, or am i completely misinformed here?

thanks

I haven't heard of being able to create an e-mail address that goes directly to the device. You would have to have something like direct push e-mail like from a company, or set up Pocket Outlook to check your POP3 account every so often... like your ISP e-mail.

Also, Outlook comes on the CD with the wx for your PC and Pocket Outlook comes pre-installed on the wx. You don't really need Outlook on your PC unless you want to sync, and back up, your contacts, calendar, etc.

Pocket Outlook also has an Outlook Mail folder that can choose to sync with your PC Outlook inbox. But it's kinda useless sunce you would have to sync to your PC to get any e-mail on it. Also, if you have more than one POP3 account and have rules set up so that messages from each specific account go to a folder besides the inbox it won't work well either.

There may be programs that can set up Yahoo mail as POP3 or push e-mail, but I don't know if any.

Hope this helps... and I'm also kind of new so I may not be 100% correct... anyone, please feel free to correct me.

No. Let me try to explain better...

Outlook is pretty much an e-mail 'reader', you cannot create an e-mail with Outlook. You can set up different POP3 e-mail accounts to be checked on Outlook. For example, I have Roadrunner as my Internet Service Provider and I set up Outlook so I receive my Roadrunner e-mail on it. Now all this is done on my computer.

If you have more than 1 POP3 account set up on Outlook, let's say Roadrunner and my e-mail from a website I help admin, I can set up Outlook to send and receive e-mail from both accounts. If I set them up just like that I would get e-mail from both accounts on my inbox and it would be a mess. So Outlook can be set up with rules... I would create a folder called Roadrunner and set up a rule that 'says': messages incoming from the Roadrunner account need to be delivered to the Roadrunner folder. I would do the same for the second account; now by doing this my Outlook Inbox would always be empty because all my e-mails get routed to their respective folders.

Now... why do I explain all this? When you sync your Windows Mobile device with your computer you can set it up to sync your Outlook contacts, calendar, and Inbox. By sync I mean you pretty much have to connect the device with a USB cable so that all the info gets transferred or sync'ed. So ONLY messages IN your PC Outlook Inbox would get transferred, there no live e-mail'ing with this option.

If you want to receive e-mail while on the road your best option is this...

Get a POP3 e-mail account, usually your ISP e-mail from home is POP3 (what is your ISP?). Then, set it up on Pocket Outlook on your Windows Mobile device (it's done under Messaging). During the last steps of set up you can set up Pocket Outlook to check this POP3 account every X amount of minutes. I wouldn't go under 30 minutes... it can drain your battery and remember internet charges apply every time, so remember to get an internet plan.

If what you want is an e-mail that automatically delivers a message to your device after it's received you want Push e-mail (I think, I'm not very familiar with the Push e-mail concept). Push e-mail is usually set up through an Exchange server and it's mostly done with company e-mails. I don't think it can be done with any regular e-mail out there...

Anyway, I hope this clears up my previous post and helps. As I said before, anyone please feel free to correct me or add info to this since I may not have all the correct info.

I can tell you for sure that you can set up a POP3 account to be checked every so often by Pocket Outlook because I have my Treo 700wx set up to check my Roadrunner e-mail every 30 minutes.
