View Full Version : Telenav 5.0.53 Available

I see Telenav is finaly available for download from Sprint on the Fusic officialy. All I can say is WOW. This version is FAR better than the 3.x series. The maps look great and are also available in 3d. It runs alot faster too. I'm in my office now so I can't say how the moving maps are (they were a little slow on previous versions when compared to Garmin) but I will post about that later.

*Edit: I'm getting it now, but it's worth noting I had to sign on from the website for it to show up. Still isn't showing up when I try to buy directly from my phone.

I'm surprised the app does not port well across hardware platforms...the older version was written for all screen sizes, wasn't it? Many well written games and apps do not have different versions for different screen sizes...I'm shocked this is not full screen on Sanyos, but it looks FANTASTIC on my Fusic...the maps are more accurate and a lot more detailed...have not used it in the car yet, but I can already tell it works better than 3.9.36, at least with my phone...

i dont know how possible this is... but we're both gonna be super happy if this works out.

somewhere in the browser version/phone version it tells Sprint.com which phone youre using. it is NOT dependant on ESN or Vision username.

so if i can find out where in the phone its telling these sites which phone im using and edit that... i could use my A900 and d/l all those older games we've wanted(like ummmmm.. bejeweled MP) as well as lets say.. the new telenav(if it were supported on the katana/5600/a800/9000).

ill keep you posted :)

Sure was. I was surprised, too, but that NFL Mobile app that's for free is the same way. Most APPS usually ported from handset-to-handset without a problem, but I guess we're reaching the end of those days. 'Tis a shame.

I don't think the compass works like a true compass [at least seems logical to me]. It works when you are moving because it uses GPS and needs a reference point to figure out direction u are facing or moving.

I got to use it this evening during travel and the moving maps seem to be updated a whole lot quicker now. Pretty much as real time as a full size gps unit is. For the most part the routes were correct except for one glitch I came a across. This area of the Bronx with elevated roadways over top of roadways would present a problem for any gps.

One thing I'm still dissapointed with, and I know it's this phone, is the speaker. On the highest volume it is hardly acceptable with the road noise in my car. Some apps do have good volume and clarity but most of the ones I've used so far do not.

maybe telenav can make use of the FM Transmitter in Fusic?

88jr
08-15-2006, 07:41 AM
Here you go guys, try this:

Get out the headphones that come with the Fusic. Take the half that plugs into the phone and plug it in. Now, the opposite end has a regular head phone jack. Plug in a cassette adapter ($10 at Wally World) and put that in your car stereo. SLAP! Now you have your GPS sound in your car! You could probably find an FM transmitter to plug into that standard headphone jack for less than $30 and do that too.

Any differences in the one available through Sprint versus version 3.9.16?

It holds the GPS signal better, maps are a lot more detailed and better looking, and there is an option for 3D maps...really cool...the business finder is still a little lacking compared to Garmin, at least where I live, but as far as navigation, this is superb...

I've been using Garmin for a couple of weeks before I tried out TeleNav today. It seems like TeleNav is much better at displaying what exit to take next or what turn to make when compared to Garmin. It reminds of the TomTom GPS device that I use for my car. I hope Garmin comes out with a newer version that competes with this latest version of TeleNav.

For navigation, I like it better than Garmin 3.0 hands down...on my Fusic, TeleNav gets a signal much more quickly and the new mapping graphics look great...I thought Garmin took a step backwards with their maps in the latest release, not to mention there is no volume on the Fusic for some reason...even on my 9000, I prefer the new TeleNav...as far as the business finder, Garmin still wins hands down, although I use Streetfinder/Vindigo/Zagat for that purpose anyway...I've heard rumors Garmin might be coming out with a similar product, and when they do, I'll be first in line to give it a try...up until the latest release of TeleNav, I personally gave Garmin the edge, but Garmin is going on the shelf for the time being...

there are a lot of threads on this subject so you can probably find out more in them, but no, you will never have GPS on your A900...it does not support it...it will not be fixed in a firmware update either...the next generation of that phone will undoubtedly address this, but I feel sorry for those with A900's that have been patiently waiting for GPS...really sucks...inexcusable oversight for a high-end phone... :bang:

Is it possible to interrupt telenav on the Fusic, initiate a call, and then resume telenav? Or is it necessary to about telenav to take a call and then restart it and re-enter your destination after completing the call?

CellGeek
08-17-2006, 12:10 PM
Why do you like Garmin better? The problem with Garmin is that it doesn't let you select a different route type. For example, on Telenav, you can select "no highways", "shortest", "fastest", or "pedestarian". Garmin doesn't give you this very useful feature. Is there anyway to do this with Garmin? Also according to mobile.garmin.com, Garmin doesn't support nearly as many phones as Telenav. It is my opinion that Garmin is very significantly behing the curve.

The main problem with GPS software like Telenav and Garmin is caused by Sprint!! Sprint needs to offer data roaming on ALL CDMA roaming partners otherwise your GPS will be rendered a useless brick in areas of Oregon where your phone is roaming on Verizon Wireless. The damn CDMA providers (Sprint and Verizon) need to get their act together regarding data roaming otherwise the GSM providers are going to kick their ass! Sprint is offering more and more applications that rely on a network data connection however, they fail to address this simple problem. When are we going to get this feature? Does anyone know?

I have not seen a way to do this. However, there is a handy feature in telenav and garmin that let you nav recent address inputs.

Lythium is right. The phone would have to be multi-tasking, and it's not. That's something I'd like Sprint to add to their phones one day, but I imagine it will be years and years.

I have no inside sources just rumors. I did call Telenav customer service and tech support and they said Tevenav 5.0 may never be available for older phones. If this is true this really sucks.

Just FYI, most of Oregon is US Cellular, only the Willamette Valley, and a small portion of the far northeast of the state has any Verizon towers at all.

Quick question from a newbie. I currently have a Samsung 8200 and tomorrow I will be joining the Fusic club. Before going in tomorrow I wanted to get a little bit of a heads up on this GPS thing. This may be a stupid question but.....well i'm known for them. How do I go about activating the GPS capabilities? I've been with Sprint for 51/2 years and have never got into a lot of the extras but coaching a youth hockey team & traveling all over WI it may really pay off depending on a few things. Here comes the dumb questions, basically it comes down to cost. Is it the $5-10 a month or is there the $40 data plan you need or is it a download? i've heard a few things and would like to get it straightened out.

Sorry for the not so "quick question" but any help will be great. Thank in Advance.

not sure about the 640...any new phone with MIDP 2.0 built in is capable of running GPS...no, you do not need a PAM plan, it has nothing to do with your laptop...you can download TeleNav for the Fusic for $9.99 a month and it gives you moving maps / turn-by-turn directions, as well as a business finder...it uses a combination of satellite GPS and CDMA triangulation, so you need to be in an area where you can get either an EVDO or regular vision signal...other than that, it is super easy to use and can be downloaded straight from your Sprint content catalog...TeleNav works great on the Fusic...

There are mounts available. Try ebay and look for the windshield suction cup mounts that fit your phone...they are pretty cheap and work really nice and place the phone near your driving view.

As for the power adapter...just use a car charger...works perfect!

 I usually don't pay attention to it the entire time. The layout of Telenav's screen is so nice, IMO. You get that big red arrow, and it also tells you how far until your next turn, merge, etc. I just check how much longer until that next turn and keep my eyes on the road until about then. Once you get comfortable with it, I guess, it gets easier. I had plenty of opportunities for that recently.
