What do you guys know about this feature? I just got one tonight from a friend and I was a bit confused. It just seems like a dignified voice mail...? Are you charged for this? It made me call a phone number in California to listen to it, so I guess that counts as long distance?

yeah, I messed around with that on the a900 a little. I don't believe the 700p has it. I imagine it would be cooler if both phones had the feature.

So if I have an unlimited texting plan I won't get charged? What about this calling long distance thing?

as far as I can tell the calling long distance is a similar fix to web messaging for sms....its a pain till you get a capable device.

*confused* I apologize if I come off as stupid, but are you saying that the a900 isn't capable of Voice SMS? I got a SMS message saying I had a Voice SMS message. So I hit the "Call" button and the phone dials some number in California and I hear my message. Did I do something wrong? Should it not call a long distance number?

no. the a900 is the only phone that I have seen utilizing this feature. I would assume that when an a900 receives a voice sms, it wouldn't have to dial out to retrieve it.

Oh ok. Well mine DID dial out...so I don't know what that means. The Fusic also has this feature, my girlfriend bought one today and was messing around with the messaging, it was the reason i'm curious about this.

shux, that seems like useless technology if everyone has to dial out for retrieval...hopefully, that is ultimately where the technology is heading.

I don't have to dial out, it comes in as a msg just like text only you don't read, you just listen. Same thing with sending it out, just record and send.

Voice SMS? Am I the only one that thinks this is funny? If we're going to send voices back and forth, wouldn't it be easier to just CALL the person :)

This might help clear things up a bit. The way VoiceSMS is supposed to work is that you get the messages like you would get a text message or MMS picture mail. It would be downloaded and put in your inbox and then notify you of the new message. Then you can listen to it and it would still stayed stored on your handset until you delete it (like a txt message), with no need to dial out. But if your phone doesn't support Voice SMS it handels it exactly like Voicemail without a password (no real benifit over VM). Once you get a VoiceSMS enabled phone though it doesn't seem to work as it should until you first SEND at least one VoiceSMS. Then the system "realizes" that you have a voiceSMS enabled phone and you will recieved them the correct way.
So to sum up, those of you who do have VoiceSMS capable phones should try sending one 1st and then it will work (at least thats how it worked for me when I got my 9000).

Thanks Don, that explains it. I just sent my first one and it said something about creating a Voice SMS account the first time you send one. It also said that standard messaging and data rates apply...so if I have an unlimited Vision and text messaging plan, will I still get charged for this?
