View Full Version : Why do I need a handler to use gmail mobile??

I've been using gmail mobile (m.gmail.com) on my Blade/A900 since January. About a week or two ago I have been receiving the following message every time I view the inbox:

"A handler is needed to use this content type."
- Get Handler
- Cancel

If I click "Get Handler" I go to Sprint's "Screensavers" page. wth?? :irked:

If I click cancel I go back to the inbox and am able to view email normally. Then if I go back to the inbox (which I do to go to a new msg) I get the "handler is needed" msg again. :bang: :indiff:

This is annoying as I check my email a dozen times a day. Anybody have any clue as to why this has started happening or how I can get it to stop?

I've tried turning the phone off and removing the battery for a little while, as well as logging off of gmail mobile and logging back in. No dice. What handler is it looking for all of a sudden?

Thanks for any help! :)

Its not your phone, its a problem with the image type that google uses for the colorfull little google at the top of the page. Many people have been having this problem and we have reported it to google, I suggest you do the same. The more people that report the problem the better chance of it being fixed. Here is another thread about googles recent problems, in it youll find the link to report the problem.

I have that problem when I use the phone's default browser. I started using the opera mini browser a few days ago and I haven't had a problem so far. You have nothing to lose by trying it, since it is a free download.

I second the notion to try Opera mobile. The latest version is great. You can get a lot more on the A920 screen by also switching the font size to smallest, which the built in browser does not let you do. I use gmail and google/ig/mobile through Opera without issue on my A920.

looks great on my phone, and is a full html browser so you can see 10 times as many sites as you can render with the built-in browser...you might be the first person ever who likes the internal browser better than opera...

This just started happening to me about 2-3 weeks ago as well. It's really annoying! How do we report it to google? Through their regular gmail?

As I noted in the cross-referenced thread in the Samsung forum, I had the same problem and sent a complaint to gmail tech support, which indicated that they are working on it. Happy to report that the problem disappeared (for me) late last week and hasn't returned.

The short answer is that indeed, it appears the new graphics on the gmail WAP page cause the A900 to display a "handler needed" message because it can't read the image. If you click on the "yes" option, you are sent to a sprint download page but won't be able to find a handler (as other have reported they don't exist!) So instead select "no" or "cancel" which will then send you to your inbox. Of course, you will have to do this every time you go to your Inbox (quite a pain).

If you still have a problem there is another workarounds: Change your internet browser display settings to text-only, which will eliminate the graphics (and the need for a "handler").

As I said, I don't have this problem anymore, so if you still have it you may want to log out of gmail and then sign in again and see what happens. Good luck.
