Hi Everyone,
I have a question about text messaging. I had a Sanyo 8200 for about 3 years, the phone went out on me and I got a new MM8300. I have text messaging problems Im sure the pros here can help with. I called Sprint and they dont know why but I have a question......

I have all my numbers stored in my phone book with the area code first. Even for local numbers. I been experimenting with sending myself text messages and my nephew who also has sprint sends me messages. If I text him with his 7 digit phone number the message gets sent but he dont get it on his phone. If I send it as the 10 digit number he gets it. If I send it as the 11 digit with the 1 in front of the area code, he gets it. I dont get messages if someone in my area sends it without the area code, I get it with the 10 digit number, but not with the 1 before the area code. I called sprint and they said some phones require the 1 some dont, but they all need the 10 digit number for it to go through. My nephew said he can send a message anywhere with the 7 digit number and people get it. Can someone explain whats going on to me ? I tried to explain to Sprint that I dont care cause I can set the numbers I send messages to with the 10 digit number, but what about all the people I know ? Some might have my number stored as 7 digits, some aith 10 digits, and some will 11 digits. Does that mean I will miss 1/3 of the messages because they dont have my number the exact wat Sprint requires it for the messaging to work ?

This is confusing to me.......
Thanks

Text messaging requires 10 digits. I have NEVER heard of a phone that needs the 1 for text messaging.. I always thought it was recommended NOT to have the 1 in phonebook entries or messaging etc.. And its not only sprint - all carriers must use 10 digits.

Again I might be wrong but i always was holding of the opinion that it always must be 10 digits, regardless of carrier. The problem is.. then how does your nephew's work. I assume it works because of the towers that are forwarding the messages.. and some automatically will put in its local area code. (Thus, making it an issue depending on where you live). Or it can be that his phone automatically puts in an area code. To check which one I assume you can get him to try sending it from different locations/towers and see what the results are.

sorry if above is confusin im half asleep

You are right, seems they do require 10 digits to work. Last night I was messing with the phone again and experimenting. I sent myself messages both ways, they took an hour to get through, and then they came through 3 times. Sprint said something about if you use the "1" before the number when sending a text, the name will show up instaed of your number in the message (or vise versa).Im going to give the new phone a few days and If it turns out to be the phone itself, Im going to return it and just tell them to turn my old phone on. Seems my girlfriend was having trouble last night sending me messages and she hasnt changed my number in her phone.
When my girlfriend called last night she said she was trying to "reply" to my messages and they wouldnt go through.

That could be in general because of the SMS issues that Sprint was having.

Tell you the truth I actaully don't recall being told to not use a 1 regarding dialing.. but regarding texting I think i have.. although it could be both and I'm just not remembering...

On Sprint The 1 Is Never Needed, Except When roaming (sometimes)
