I had a Sanyo 9000 when it first came out and at times I regret selling it. I was going to buy another 9000 but I wanted a compact phone with bluetooth so I got a Fusic. For the most part I'm happy with the Fusic. At times I miss having a Sanyo/QVGA so I will be trying the 8400 to see if I like it better then the Fusic.

I didn't keep the Katana very long but it seemed like it had a few bugs which I was surprised because usually Sanyo is pretty good releasing phones with very few bugs if any. Hopefully the 8400 will be bug free. :fingers:

A definite pattern, in my opinion, is developing with the very thin flip phones being more buggy than most, I think the technology is stretched to the limit (maybe beyond) in what they're trying to accomplish with these tiny phones. Now Sanyo is having problems too with the thin phones.......Hmmmm
Note the 8400 is not a "thin" phone either, apparently they can't squeeze the larger ready link? type speakerphone in a small case and possibly other components too.

Yeah, it is kind of odd. Sanyo's design are what they are, either you can live with em or you can't, but their UI taking a step back with some reported bugs is not a welcomed announcement. The 8400 will give us some indication whether the katana being released with a couple bugs was just a fluke or not.

Online (telesales and.....) will get it first, I noticed when the LG550 came out, it took a while for the corporate stores to get'em.

Given Telesales' refusal to confirm phone agreements immediately by email, be sure to tape Telesales conversations to protect yourself. You have little recourse if "miscommunications" occur other than beating a wall. SU is full of horror stories.:cool

theres been some posts on the site saying theres a rebate directly for the 8400 that expires at the end of the month...This is the Internet. Anyone can say anything (and here at SU, they do). The Equipment Replacement Rebate Plan for all equipment is changing on 9 Sep 06 (date on the Sprint site), however, a specific rebate for the 8400 was probably a misinterpretation or an in-progress guess. Initially, Sprint insiders here initially said the 8400 was going to be a $249 phone. Now, based on www.sprintusers.com/forum/showthread.php?p=1144633 (http://www.sprintusers.com/forum/showthread.php?p=1144633), it seems to have gone up to $279.

Nope. There was no misinterpretation, i am sitting here looking at it. The flyer says, Special offers end 9/30, save up to $150 instantly on the purchase of any Sprint PCS device. Plus, take advantage of additional mail-in savings on these select devices. It lists these phones as eligable for mail-in rebates of:
a900 ($100)
Katana ($50)
Fusic ($30)
SCP 2400 ($29.99)
RL-4930 ($29.99)
scp 8400 ($20)
Sooo....i don't think i was confused. As far as price goes the $279.99 seems resonable since that's what the 8200, and 8300 sold for. I have no inside knowledge on the price but am only going on what's resonable, however i have also heard $300 price range so i won't claim to know, only thought is was interesting what our IN-STORE COLLATORAL SAYS...

I gotta say that all this talk about a M1 coming out Nov./Dec. sounds a little suspect. After all, Sprint discontinued the 9000 because it was too expensive, thats what I was told by Sprint. Why would they come out with another "high end" phone they dont think will sell? Just my opinion!

Price was not the issue as it sold out pretty quickly. The 9000 and Samsung A940 were EVDO test phones. They only made a limited quantity of 50,000 each. There are a lot more expensive phones that consumers have no trouble spending on.

I thought the reason why Sprint discontinued the 9000 was because they couldn't tell if people were using it as modem or something like that. Who knows for sure. I think maybe Sanyo messed up by not releasing the 8400 sooner. I've waited this long, I think I can wait another 4 months and if the M1 is not for real then I might try a motorola.

People have been begging for a new Sanyo all year and in Apr-July, the 8400 would have sold like hotcakes. Now, coming out 5 weeks before more advanced phones (for little more money), the 8400 will likely not get the volume sales it could have. Just got off the phone w/a Sprint rep. and was told by the end of the year we will see 4G phones. So I guess that PowerVision upgrade will be seen in phones before the year is out. I just read about it on Sprints site. Moto and Samsung are said to be the major suppliers. So as of right now, looks like the only Sanyo that MIGHT be 4G could be this M1. So I guess you can go with the MM-8400 sooner, or wait for the 4G phones later. Myself, my 9000 can hold me off till Xmas and see what the new 3G phones will be like. Its only a few months away, although I just wonder what the form factor will be on the M1? I dont want anything but a flip. So, Sanyo 4G by the end of 06? Thats something to get excited about! :headbang2

Copied from PhoneScoop:
Sprint Launches First Rev. A Laptop Card
Aug 29, 2006, 7:46 AM source: Sprint / Sierra Wireless
Sprint today started selling the country's first EVDO Revision A-capable device, the Novatel S720 Mobile Broadband Card. The Type II PC card works on Sprint's current EVDO Release 0 network - currently covering over 153 million people - and will also take advantage of EVDO Rev. A as Sprint starts upgrading its network in coming months. By the end of this year, Sprint plans to cover 40 million people with EVDO Rev. A, and 200 million people with EVDO Rel. 0. The new Rev A. technology offers faster download speeds, much faster upload speeds, and less overall latency (delay). In a separate announcement, Sierra Wireless yesterday announced the first EVDO Rev. A card for laptops in the new ExpressCard form factor. It is expected to launch in Q1 2007.

What good is a phone which works in -1 of those markets?
True...The time is approaching for me to get a new phone under the upgrade program. I'm anticipating EV-DO Rev. A phones so that I can take advantage of the network upgrades as they become available. I'm not one to upgrade my phones often (Current Phone: Sanyo 8200)...Therefore, I'm trying to purchase a phone that will last. I would hate to buy a Rev. 0 handset now so that I can wish I had a Rev. A handset a couple months later when the Rev. A network goes live.
I believe we wont see Rev. A phones till sometime in 07
Okay...Thanks for the information! :)
Maybe the enhancements between EV-DO Revisions isn't something I should even worry about. Probably too small for the average customer to even notice.

speaking of Rev A.. anyone know if the current power vision plans will use Rev A.. or are all us SERO users screwed?
The Power Vision option will serve Rev 0 & Rev A hardware; however, Rev A trasmission capability will slowly roll out over the next 17 months. Handsets will also slowly come out that can handle Rev A. Current ones cannot.

good question! i opened the 9000 page and 8400 page on sanyo.com. put them side by side, they have the exact same features except the 8400 has more features (i.e bluetooth, themes,) so i have no idea why its scp. maybe theyll update it to MM later on? but im in line
One feature the 8400 lacks that is included with the 9000 is the multi colored LED. Probably not a huge deal to most but I always thought it was kinda cool on the 5500, 5600 and 9000.

you cannot assume a 2GB will work.. in fact, theres a good chance that a 2GB card will not work correctly if they say up to 1GB, based on the issues with other phones and 2GB cards currently

Was it confirmed that the LED's were green on this phone? if so, does anyone know if the entire key pad will light up on the white model given that the key pad is white with black numbers / letters a la the Fusic? If so, that would make the white model a no brainer choice.

Wish the black 8400 was all black rather than black/silver. Oh well, something for the Raiders fans
I think this 8400 has everything I like about my Katana ('cept slimness) and everything I miss about the traditional Sanyos (hopefully including top reception).
This is just a guess, but I'm betting the M1 is going to be something music oriented to compete with the VZ/LG Chocolate. Yes, there's the Fusic, but it doesn't have the slick visual appeal of the Chocolate; the supposed retail pricepoint is similar, and the model, M1.. hmm.. (anyone remember sammy M100 ?) I don't see Sanyo making a PDA type device. (and what Sprint PDA device has sold that "cheap" initially?). My other guess, if Sprint decides the Fusic is sufficient as a music centric device, would be a 3MP+ cam phone to compete with Samsung a990, also on VZW.

Your Welcome. I have used several phones this year: A900,A920,A800 and I went in search for a 9K and finally found one and I have not had any problems with it. I bought the WX and took it back the next day just because it did not do some stuff that I could do with my 9K like PAM without a plan, Sprint T.V. I like listen to Sirius Hits 1 from my cell phone, since i have it hooked up to my cd player in the car. I will buy a WM Smartphone one day, hopefully from Sanyo.

It's not that when "sanyo" comes out with a phone everyone finds something wrong with it, it's that when EVERYONE comes out with a phone we can find something about it we'd change or prefer to have differently. I didn't say "Well, green keys, it's junk now", I just said that I like other options I've seen lately on other phones much better than the green, so the green keys aren't for me. So no, no "brake" given. I don't like the green. Simple as that.

question??? why when sanyo comes out with a phone someone finds things wrong with it. bluetooth was an issue now green keys damn give me a brakeThis is a cell phone discussion site so you would think that people are going to have there opinions. Know one likes it when people say negative things about phones exspecially when the person never has even used the phone or just had it for 1 day. We just have to deal with it no matter what you think is right. It's not like you and a lot of others on this site don't bash the Fusic. For some reason I think that you will never get rid of your "perfect" 9000.
If thats the case then I want one. I hope the speaker is loud not like the fusic yuckI don't need a speaker that's going to blow my eardrums. :hee: I would rather have a clear medium speaker then a loud distorted one anyday. I've been saying that the 8400 is going to better then 9000 but for some reason you die hard 9000 lovers are in a state of denial. lol I mean come on the 9000 has been out for almost a year. Any new mid to high range phone coming out now should be as good. I think the bluetooth and the smaller size makes it better then the 9000 but that's just my opinion. It will be nice not to have to enter a few hundered contacts by hand. I just hope that the 8400 earpiece is better then the 9000. One thing that I do like about the Fusic is how clear the earpiece is compared to probably every Sanyo phone.

so no blue like the 9000 and and no LED:-( i know it sounds petty but I think that my blinking pink light is really cool whe i'm talking on the phone and as far as the color of the back light for the buttons green is ok blue would be better. but yellow would be the coolest. so maybe instead of gettin ourselves all worked up over LED and button colors we need to be thankful that there's finally something new and exciting from sanyo. but still i think i'll keep on waiting (maybe) for the ever so elusive M1. Hope it has LED!!!!!

The 8400 may have bluetooth, themes, wireless backup, and a bit smaller size...but even a year later the 9000 performs better than pretty much every phone out there. There's a few with more features, but it's not always about features to some of us. Sure, I'd like an FM transmitter in my phone. Am I gonna give up something that's been working great for the last year? No, I'm not. There's phone junkies, and phone junkies, not everybody just drops a great phone for the newest coolest thing.
I really think the 8400 is gonna be a great phone. I may try one, but I have preferences. I like blue keys. I don't wanna buy another memory card. The outer LED on the 9K is cool to me and i HIGHLY doubt the 84 will include this feature. All this and my 9K is barely 2 months old. I've still gotta scratch it once or twice :hee: the only reason in my humble opinion to jump ship from the 9K for the 84 is bluetooth, and that reason is making me consider the move...but I'm not in denial, both will be great phones.
Wow, 3000th post. Time to find something else to do

Time to find something else to do :lol:I agree the 9000 is a good phone and I've owned 2 of them but I just don't care for the design/build because it's just weird to me. It's like they decided to add the sd card at the last moment. I think I just got bored with the 9000 kinda quick because I had the 5600 before it and there's not a lot of difference between the too. I think the 8400 will be a great phone as well. I really want to pass on the 8400 and wait for the M1 but I doubt I will since I usually can't keep a phone for more then 4 months. lol

One thing to keep in mind about the 9k...while it was a great phone, it has no BT. I honestly pity people who walk around having to hold their phone up to their head for hours. And if you're not holding that phone up to your head, you have cords wrapped all over the place. In the year 2006, almost 2007, everyone should be converted or converting to BT. I can't imagine holding a phone of that size to the side of my head for a 1 hour conversation, now that's ghetto.

any more prophecies for the future? what a ridiculous statement.
all of the sudden using a 9K is ghetto? hmmmm, that was like what, a $400 phone? sure there's no BT but at least it's not someone using some kyocera 414 on page plus cellular. now that's ghetto.
I know you work for sprint but maybe you should think twice before hitting the 'submit' button. That elitest view of cell phones doesn't apply to everyone...and yes I have 2 BT phones and 2 BT headsets.

When I used bluetooth the A900 it drained the battery really quick. Bluetooth doesn't seem to effect the Fusic. I can go a few days on one charge with bluetooth always on and somewhat heavy use with the Fusic.

nice josh
personally i dont think its the god of ALL phones, its not...but I think of it this way....the 8xxx always gets the hand-me-downs from the 5K (or 9K in this case) series. Most of us 9000 users get nothing but BT by going to an 8400...which may be enough for some, not for others. We're going to need something more than an 8400 to be excited.

I agree with that....but you can't knock the phone because it works and it works well!I'm just playen around with the kid trying to tell him the 9000 is not "perfect". lol I like the 9000 a lot and I was torn between it and the Fusic but I just prefer a smaller phone and bluetooth. It's 2006 and Sanyo still is making a phone that is the same size of the 5300 which came out 4 or 5 years ago. If I'm going to carry a big fat flip phone I would rather just rather get a pda. I prefer Sanyo's but lately they are pissing me off because they keep releasing phones with the same old design and minimal improvements. The Katana has the same camera that the 8100 had that's just unacceptable to me.
The 9k is past it's time, period. Move on and quit acting like this is the god of all phones. It was nice, but the key word is WAS.I completely agree with you.

The M1 should satisfy the 9k users needs. It's just frustrating to have 9k users bash every single other phone that hits the market to defend their phone. It's ridiculous. While some posters say "the speaker phone is better than the fusics" then I say that the BT on the fusic is better because it simply has the feature. I say that it's just as reliable and of good quality. I say the fusic is lighter and easier to carry. But the 9k was still a good phone in my opinion, but I hate that 9k lovers just bash everything that hits the market when they're holding a 1 year old handset missing features that even 50 dollar phones come with now.

I can't speak for all 9000 users, but the sig bar does speak for itself....had a fusic, gave it to the girl...she likes it better than I do. I actually prefer the sanyo interface to the one on the fusic too. It sucks, but the Sanyo v. everything battle has been going on forever, and will probably never end. But I really, REALLY, hope that Sanyo gives us an all-new, incredible phone in the M1 or I'll be sorely disappointed.

EDIT
I think it's funny how people bash the Fusic by saying it's a "girly" phone. The Fusic has a clear earpiece, great reception, and it's battery is probably the best out of all the EV-DO phones so for the most part I'm satisfied with it. I really need to just stay away from the Sprint store untill the M1 comes out but I know I'll probably pick up a 8400 just because I want a new toy. lol

Another thing that bothers me with Sanyo's is that they only have 9 speed dials and they have a browser page limit or whatever it's called. When I viewed a sprintusers wap thread on the 9000 that had a few pictures in it you could see the first picture but the other pictures would not show up because of the page limit. I don't have that issue with the Fusic.

i think us phone junkies just need our fix, hence the crankiness. It's been a long, long time since the first round of PV phones, and we've had a summer of Fusics and Katanas. Although those phones are in different leagues, it's all we've gotten. We need a stronger buzz than those two phones are offering, although the Fusic is really nice.
Come christmas we'll all be happy again, after we've gotten our fix of the new handsets. Then next summer will come and by mid september this discussion will come about again with the impending release of the 8500, a rehashed M1.

I don't HATE the 9k at all. I almost picked one up...accept it didn't have the bt feature ... The phone is fine, but it is now dated.Couldn't agree more. As I held a 9K in a Radio Shack I was an inch for buying it too; but, except for EVDO, it didn't do much more than my 3 year old VM4500. Bluetooth made me wait. The next step I'll look for after Bluetooth is Rev A and videoconferencing. We only get a $150 rebate every 24 months. Might as well get something substantially new for it.
The 8400 is scheduled to be here in 21 days. At this point though, I'm going to wait to see the specs on the M1 before buying it. If the M1 is Rev A. It'll be worth waiting for as I imagine private mobile videoconferencing software will be out shortly after Rev A fields.

Another review from phonemag that says the release date is 10/1. I know it's not new news.

There is a difference. Colors are much more deeper... things aren't so faded looking.
But to the average user, nobody's gonna notice a thing.
We here at SU are not average users. :D
thats for sure, ive payed more attention to my phone quality, since ive joined here. the 8400 its going to be TV enabled! so it should be as colorful as the blade, with is 262k colors so it looks sharp! well see what happens

Now that you mention it, i went to a sprint store and looked at the Katanas screen, and the 9ks screen and i did notice a difference, my phones screen did look better.

what i dont understand is if sprint has the technology pack 262k colors into a phone, which the A900, 9000 proves it then why dont the require all upcoming phones to have 262k in colors?

My guess is they wanted to keep the manufacturing costs down.

because i'm 99% certain this phone and katana share the same screen....or as said eariler, to lower manufacturing costs...and there's no way you can upgrade your screen hardware short of trying to install a 9K screen in that phone....but i never told you to do that :p

Seems Sprint/Sanyo are doing a very well measured roll-out to build the hype reaching markets in and outside Sprint. I imagine it will cause a race to get the first wave of inventory.
Makes me think the M1 won't be out on Nov 5 as early intel has indicated. There isn't that much time to build a similar excitement as the preliminary specs haven't even been released. On the other hand, perhaps Sprint feels the Christmas buying wave won't require as much hype.
15 days the 8400 release. 45 til the M1 (maybe).:hungry:

i feel exactly the same way after watching the video... it just looks like a cheap phone, and a clone of all the older Sanyos out there.
and that changeable faceplate makes the whole package seem cheap, and toyish..
just my opinoin of course

so went to sprint today, played with the katana and the 3100 side by side because they both have 65k in color. it seemed as though the katana was sharper in the color and the 3100 was grainy. here are the specs for the two:
katana
Type: TFT
Size
Refers to the width and the height of the display Size: 240 x 320 pixels
Colors
Shows the number of colors that the display supports Colors: 65536
3100
Type: STN
Size
Refers to the width and the height of the display Size: 128 x 160 pixels
Colors
Shows the number of colors that the display supports Colors: 65536
i assume the STN means standard? what does TFT stand for? and can someone explain the pixel numbers for me. if the 8400 display is like the katana i think i can live with that.

What I really want to know is if any of these new phones hitting the market will have the fm transmitter like the fusic. I've found that to be a very nice feature.

That website says that the phone has an FM RADIO, not an FM TRANSMITTER.
But the Sanyo website doesn't list either of them.

Not even on the M1 or any of the other high end models? My wife really wants that feature now that I have it on the fusic but I wanted to expand our family phone lineup by getting her a different model this fall and not be toting two of the same exact phone. :( And I don't want to give her my fusic, LOL

Mobiledia's article is misleading in that regard. They indicate that it is FM Enabled. When I brought it to their attention, this was thier reply.......

So unless I'm missing someting, the short answer is "NO", you can't tune into your favorite FM station from your 8400.
