Q: What colors does the Katana come in?

Q: Is the Katana half- or full-duplex?

Q: Ring tone volume?

A: Finally, yes. There are a total of 8, 6 are new.

Q: When active on a call, does the Katana blacklight stay lite?
A: Yes, but dimmed.

Q: What is the battery life like?
A: Talk time 3 hours.

Q: Does the Katana support EVDO(Power Vision)?
A: No, Katana uses 1X - Vision.

Q: Is there a keypad lock for the outside buttons?
A: Yes.

Q: Does the Katana have a media player(sprint tv/media)?
A: No.

Q: Does the Katana have a memory card slot?
A: No.

Q: Can I play mp3’s and AAC’s on the Katana?
A: No, these file types are not supported.

Q: Does the Katana have wireless backup?
A: Yes.

Q: What Bluetooth profiles are supported?
A: According to the phone, it supports HSP (Headset Profile), HFP (Hands-Free Profile), DUN (Dial-Up Networking), OPP (Object Push Profile).

Q: Can I send files to the phone with Bluetooth?
A: Wallpapers can’t be sent via Bluetooth. Contacts can be sent via Bluetooth.

Q: Can I tether with Bluetooth (#777)?
A: Sure, if you have a PAM (Phone-As-Modem) plan. You must download the drivers first.

Q: Can I tether with a data cable (#777)?
A: Sure, if you have a PAM (Phone-As-Modem) plan. You must download the drivers first.

Q: Does the Katana have a NAI option in the data menu?
A: No.

Q: Where can I get USB drivers for the Katana?
A: USB drivers are available from Sprint, included with the Sprint Connection Manager (http://www4.sprint.com/pcsbusiness/support/downloads/index.jsp?internalId=downloads), or available via 3rd party from Susteen (http://support.susteen.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=2623). (thanks KatanaMan)

Q: How much room do you get for downloads?
A: 5 MB total.

Q: Does this phone supports themes.

Where are the accessories available at? I can't find them anywhere on Sprint's page.

Nevermind, found them, at the bottom of the Katana page.

I've been researching this now for a week. As of Sept. 20 06 Neither futuredial nor bitpim support the Katana.

DataPilot does with a common type of mobile USB cable.
Mobile Action Handset Manager Data Suite (MA-8512P) also does.

The caveat here is that using either the DataPilot or Mobile Action software, the functionality is severely handicapped. You will only be able to manage contacts and download snapshots, about 10% of the software's advertised functionality. So it is like paying full price for crap.

I can't find any information as to whether either company plans on expanding the capabilities of the software for this phone.

Here's the lowest price I have found today...
USB Data Suite [MA-8512P] for Sanyo Katana (SCP-6600) $19.99
http://www.dealsonic.com/moacmausbham3.html

If anyone knows of an inexpensive way to transfer camera pictures from the phone to the pc via USB please let me know.

That's what I want to know. I should have watched the salesman do it. I tried to the other day and only half the battery cover wanted to come off. The right side seemed very firmly attached. I chickened out.

Has anyone tried DataPilot with the Katana? Are you able to both read and write the phonebook? Can you transfer photos from the camera to your PC? These capabilities are claimed on DataPilot's website, but I would like to hear from a user if it is really so.

I ask about read/write for the phonebook because I was able to use Bluetooth object push to send contacts one at a time to the phone, but didn't find a way to read contacts from the phone.

I am getting this phone today. Do I need any software like Datapilot to transfer my contacts to the phone? I do not need to transfer other files (yet) but I just want to get my phonebook into the phone.

I have seen several USB cables around. Are they all the same (or similar)? Is there one cable that is better than the others? Do they charge the phone from the USB?

You can update the FAQ to include partial BitPim support for the Katana. As of v0.9.0.8 partial support is present:

From the changelog...
"Sanyo SPH-6600 (Katana): Phonebook and wallpaper/ringtone writing not supported. Camera images read with wallpaper."

This version was released on Nov 15th.

I read somewhere here on the board that only Motorola phones are officially supported for use with their headsets. Because of that, along with the numerous complaints from other users, I decided to purchase a Philips VOX-150 (http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?pfp=srch1&Ntt=%22VOX+150%22&N=0&Dx=mode+matchall&Nty=1&D=%22VOX+150%22&Ntk=All&product_code=336359) . That's fairly standard behavior for most Sanyo phones. If turned on when you plug it in, the screen will light up.

Hello. New Katana user here. Few questions:

1) Any way to gently remove the rubber cover for the charger jack? Its annoying to move it every time.

2) Anyone else think the speaker phone isn't all that? Most of the people I call with it can't hear me well.

Thanks in advance

The easiest way to get the cover off , I've found, is to drop the phone on a tile floor.;^)

Hi there. I am new to this site & forum. Glad I found it; lots of good user discussion. This is good. All of us Sprint users need a shoulder to cry on (HA - just kidding). Have been with Sprint for roughly 8 years, and it has been good for the most part.

Just renewed my contract and got a Katana, my first experience with a camera phone. Katana was selected more so because of the dimensions (and being thin) and nice display, rather than the camera of which I have a problem:

The camera button on my Katana will mute a call when depressed. Since I am big guy with big fumbly fingers, I am hitting the camera button quite frequently by accident, and not knowing this, as in working or driving and talking, callers are hanging up since they can't hear me (thinking I have gone into a dead zone). This is not good. This feature is not in the manual either, which says, as I am used too (with older phones), the mute option is thru the keypad menu.

So, hmmm, I am wondering whether my phone is defective or not, or can this stealthy feature be disabled? The Sprint store reps say thats life with a Katana and see ya later.

Can others out there confirm this one way or another? I do not know anyone else who owns a Katana. Considering exchanging the Katana for a non-camera model. Thanks for the reply (in advance).

The mute button sounds like a very useful feature. Thank you for sharing your fat finget mistake. I have had a few phones that allow you ro re-assign some of the buttons. Have you checked that yet?

I just ordered a new Katana for my wife.

jdl1219:

Can't argue that muting is a needed feature, but not so convenient that you accidently invoke it almost every call. I bought one for my wife too, who doesn't use as much as I do, but has had the experience once now (losing the call because they thought she went into a dead zone). We are both saying hmmm.

I did get the Sprint store to dig on this finally and was told Sanyo added this "feature" to the Katana in their latest manufacturing batch. The store demo unit, which was 4 months old, couldn't do this (mute by the external button). Thus the store reps were clueless as to what I was complaining about, and of course, the feature is not documented in the manual (still). Further, they determined there is no available internal menu pick or software update to disable this yet. Hopefully, Sanyo wakes up soon. I just can't believe I am the only one not liking this new feature. My 30 days on the return policy is up at the end the month, so they better hurry up, or I will trade the phone in for a different make/model (probably in another week). Can't live with it as is. Sorry to let it go, I do like the physical profile and display.

Thanks for the reply.

Hello,

Regarding the camera button acting as a mute. I just got this phone yesterday and on page 29 of my users manual it describes the mute function. The first way to do it is to use Options (right softkey) > Mute. In the "Tip" line it says:

During a call, the Side Volume key functions as the Mute button. Press and hold it to mute the phone's microphone for privacy. Press and hold it again to unmute the phone.

Hope that was helpful!

To Pricer15:

Yes, I know of the two published functions, and they are ok. Its just that on the Katana phone that I have, the Camera button on the right, mutes as well as the volume button AND the software key (thru the menu), and that feature is not in my manual, dated 6/06.

Regardless, I have decided to tough it out with the phone, primarily because I like the slim profile so much (I keep the phone in my pocket; tired of the clips ripping up my belt or the phone/clip getting hung-up in a chair).

In the mean time, will be training myself to listen carefully for the tone when the mute function is invoked (by accidently hitting the camera button) and will be sending emails to Sanyo to see if they will ever have software upgrade to make the camera button an option for control of mute. If I hear anything back, will let you all know.

The Katana doesn't do animations.

Actually, I found a number of animations on my Katana. Most of them are screen transitions, like turning the phone on and off, outgoing calls, and service search. They are set in there by my provider Qwest. For picking a screen saver animation, go to Menu>settings>display>animation. Choose either 'set' to set the type of animation, or 'time' to set how quickly the animation comes up. Choose preset 1 which I have as swimming fish, or preset 2 which is a penquin. If you have internet, apparently you can download others (don't know the format) that if stored in My Content, you can choose as a screen saver. You have to have the main or sub lcd screen saver set to off before the animation comes up though. Even with the power saver feature set to off, the animation only lasts about 25 seconds before the screen goes black.

The other animation was for the Kung Fu ring tone melody. Again, you have to have no picture set for incoming calls for a person in your phone book and the Kung Fu ring tone set. Then, when they call you, you will see the animation, or you can preview it while in your contact list for a person that has that ringtone set. When you go to review the ringtones, you will see a little picture of a note next to the name Kung Fu. I think this means that a ring tone has an animation with it. The only place I found the ringtones is when I go to add an entry or edit a person's ring tones and, then click melodies and you will see various songs. The Kung Fu song is the last one.

If anyone can figure out which format and how to get other animations onto the Katana, please share.

If anyone can figure out which format and how to get other animations onto the Katana, please share.

I spoke to Sanyo tech support today and found out that the only way to get additional animations onto my phone is to download them from Sprint and pay $. You can upload screensavers and ringers to the phone via the focus tool on this site or others mentioned in the forums.

I also found out how to check available memory on the Katana. First I confirmed with Sanyo that there is 5MB total memory on the phone (My provider Qwest had told me 2-3KB). This memory is for all functions, games, screen savers, ringers, animations, etc. Go to Menu>My Content. Highlight but don't select any of the choices, either games, animations, screen savers, or ringers. Push the right softkey - titled Options. Select View Memory and you will see used and available memory. This can come in handy when deciding if you can upload that next ringtone, or when you need to download or delete pictures. Of course, this info is not in the manual!

So, it looks like the Sanyo Katana will not let you transfer ringtones or wallpapers from your PC to your phone using a USB cable or bluetooth right now - that is if you are using BitPim or MobileAction software - both do not seem to work for anything other than contacts .

At least you can transfer your contacts. It just ticks me off that there is 5 MB of memory just sitting there you cannot access from your PC. :irked:

Hi, I just got a Katana yesterday and I wanted to know does this phone has bluetooth problems? It seems that my Plantronics Voyager 510 can't sync with this phone. When I had my Razr from Cingular it worked perfectly for over 1 year.

Thanks, I'm just asking if I have to take the phone back and get something else. The phone was free and I wanted a reliable phone (free).

I would advise calling sprint, or asking these questions in the store...

Does anyone know what the order for contacts on a Katana II is?

This is not a dumb as it sounds. For instance, on my previous Samsung, if I put an asterisk in front of a contact, it promoted it to the top of the contact list. Very handy for frequently called numbers.

With my new Katana the asterisk demotes the contact to the bottom of the list.

Is there a character which comes before "a" in the Katana ordering scheme?

Try using a space in front of the names you want bumped to the top of your list.

Hey folks, I've been using the katana for a year and would like to lock the phone from time to time. How do you lock the phone?

Thanks for any help.

Thanks for any help.

You have to go to settings and then security. The lock code is the last 4 digits of your phone number or 0000 by default (some have said it's the last four of your social). From there it's easy.

If anyone knows of an inexpensive way to transfer camera pictures from the phone to the pc via USB please let me know.

SEND THEM TO YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS THEN OPEN YOUR EMAIL

THEN SELECT EDIT AT THE TOP OF YOUR BROWSER. THEN SELECT THE SELECT ALL OPTION. THEN SELECT COPY AND THEN MINIMIZE YOUR BROWSER AND OPEN UP MY DOCUMENTS. AND POINT YOUR MOUSE IN THE MIDDLE AND PRESS THE BUTTON. THEN GO TO EDIT AGAIN AND SELECT PASTE. THEN YOU CAN THANK ME AFTER EVERYONE CALLED ME A LOSER YESTERDAY?

The FAQ says:
A: USB drivers are available from Sprint, included with the Sprint Connection Manager, or available via 3rd party from Susteen. (thanks KatanaMan)

That Susteen link to http://support.susteen.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=2623 results in "This support portal is disabled."
I think DataPilot/Susteen need you to register before you can download anything.

I tried installing the drivers out of the Sprint Connection Manager, and Vista still thinks I don't have a modem driver for my Katana DLX (so I can't use it with Bitpim). If anyone has a link to Sanyo drivers that make a Katana DLX work with Vista, please post, thanks.

<flame on>After the 9th circle hell trying to get MM9000 drivers for Windows 98 and now the awfulness of Katana DLX drivers for Vista, I'm really pissed off. I pay good money for phones that come with data cables and then have to wander the Internet for days to get the cables to work.

The time and energy wasted by Sprint/Sanyo/DataPilot/FutureDial/Susteen/JohnDoeUSBcables all screwing around trying to each maintain proprietary drivers is mostly wasted. Just publish a set of simple .INF files for the phones and O.S. variations and let your poor be***dled engineers sitting at a desk with a drawer full of phones collaborate on maintaining drivers.</flame off>

Not sure if the menu tree is the same, but on the Katana DLX do...

Tools --> File Manager --> microSD Options --> Save Phone Book

This will place a .vcf file on your microSD card, in the SD_PIM directory.

You can then import the file into BitPim and edit contacts as needed.

m curious to know how many DLX owners carry the phone in their pocket...that being said does carrying the phone in your pocket scratch/damage the front because all the models that i see in the stores look so scuffed and nasty. oh and another question...i saw that the phone has the on demand feature...but when i went into it i only saw the first page and not the extras page that includes astrology, dear abby, and weird news...are these there and i missed them?

I tried a bunch of bluetooth transfers between a Sanyo Katana and a HTC Mogul Windows Mobile device. Both devices could detect the other. Information though failed to transfer mostly. If I made a to do list in the katana, I could transfer it to the Mogul, yet I could not send a list item from the Mogul to the Katana. Or maybe I just could figure out how... Possible 3rd party app to make it work? That really is the only thing I want to transfer. Any ideas?

Does anyone know how to synchronize calendar, date book, outlook to katana eclipse x ? How do I get my computer to recognize the device? Is there a download on sprint that will do this? I installed a program for my razor (with At&t) and it sync nicely. Is there something for the Eclipse?
Thanks!!!!!
