The sanyo rep came by the store today and showed us the 8400. It is nice!!! Cross between the 9000 and the 7500. Qvga screen, 7500 body w/o rubber, bluetooth, and 1.3 mp camera. I wanna get rid of my 7500 now. He said late August, early Sept. It was blue in color and he said there was going to be a white one and one other color, I forgot.

I also saw the new i880 from Motorola. The next step up from the i870. It was nice. Thinnest Nextel phone i've seen. Not as thin as the a900 or katana, but for Nextel it is thin. 2mp camera. Ugly dark purple/maroon color. Almost look like a dull pen ink color. I think it's the same design as the dual mode phone. Best designed Nextel phone so far. I think motorola rep said October. Sorry they said no pics.

Man i need to trade my 7500 for that new 8400!

Sanyo is now making people sick, literally.

Good God, I had to turn away from the monitor for a few seconds. What is with these designs? They make the Nextel phones look gorgeous. Yet all of the Sanyo people eat it up.

Just put an EV-DO chip and megapixel camera in the Katana already.

Now that I've cleaned up the resulting vomit, I now understand my attraction to the i850. And I don't use anything but Sanyo... until now.

Another Sanyo that looks just like every other Sanyo, what a surprise!

Oh and by the way, in case you weren't aware:

i personally like the sanyo phone except for the 2300 and the 3100 and the lower class phones but the 8000 series and 9000 series have been really good. and im sure this 8400 will be absolutely great too. think abnout it, it has all the features that the 8300 and 9000 SHOULD have had

No no - I have already come to the conclusion that Sprint's lineup is more or less atrocious compared to it's largest CDMA counterpart.

With exclusives like the KRZR, SLVR, A990, Q, 700w, Chocolate, and RAZR V3m, Sprint never really stood a chance.

I'm sorry, but it absolutely pains me to see them still recieving third rate phones like the 8400, a phone that in all respects pales in every concievable dimension to all the phones I listed above.

I want to see Sanyo put this kind of thought into their desings. Do something. For gods sake, do something more than create another tacky rehash.

http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.engadget.com/media/2006/07/motorola-motorazr-maxx.jpghttp://img135.imageshack.us/img135/8260/dsc04648605dw5.jpg

If they are not capable of that, I'm sorry, but they have absolutely no business positioning themselves as a premier manufacture in the North American mobile phone market.

Good luck with that one. Moto has had BT for how many years now? Sanyo has 1 model in the US with BT? Try again. Sony has BT, nokia has BT. They also have phones that play MP3'S, video, get great reception and QVGA screens. What other features do you need?

I am feeling that warm feeling in my heart opening up again just like the first time I bought a Motorola. The excitiment...The urge...The overall feeling of owning a Motorola. It's hard to explain. I think it has to due with Moto as a whole...the "Bubble" ringer..."hello moto"...

All I can say is that I want a KRZR/Maxx/RIZR...For the sexiness...for the ringers...for the interface...for the Motorola accessories,

Motorola has done it again, and when Motorola does it, nobody does it like Motorola.

How many Motorolas have you actually used? I have had 6, and everyone has worked when I needed it it too. Can't say the same about Sanyo, No Moto I have used had that redial bug that plagued the 4500 and 8200.

Either way, it doesn't matter. You are happy with your phone, and I am happy with my phones. Yeah plural. I can switch my sim anytime I want. Oh sorry you can't.

sure.. noone does it like motorola. was that why camera phones we so lame back then when they brought out the t720 or crapped out with the time ports. only 3 phones came good with motorola. that is the startac, razr, and slvr. thats it. bandwagons arent the best representative of motorola. and thats why i love samsung in gsm, and sanyo in cdma.

I for one am sick of all the sanyo's having the same look...only slightly updated. This phone looks damn near identical to the 9000, 830, 8200, 8100, 5400, 5500, etc. Why is it that Sanyo is the only manufacturer that has had the exact same design everytime they release a phone? Every other manufacturer at least tries different things...and adds different features. Sanyo just keeps adding a feature or 2, and updating the phone. 8300 + EVDO = 8400? 8400 + 2MP cam = 8500? Maybe they'll release a new color next time too...

I really miss Sanyo from the 4900 days. Whenever they can start building phones that get the job done, and aren't full of bugs again...i'll buy another one. Until then..i'll keep wishing for more.

BTW...none of you have ever heard quality until you've used a good phone. Check out a ringer on the Sony Ericsson phones...clear, loud as hell, and does not distort! Moto's phones are the same way for the most part...especially the iDEN phones. Not a single Sprint phone can touch ANY of those.

p.s. I think tuo should be allowed back. What's wrong with one expressing their opinion on a phone? Everyone else here does it..maybe not to that extent, but hey, he's got some valid points. BRING BACK TUO! I'm tired of going to hofo just to see what he has to say. (and i've even got proof that he actually reccomended a Sanyo to me on hofo)

Even though I am tired of the design (they need to finally bring a decent internal antenna phone out), everybody that has owned Sanyo will come back for the refresh on design and feature set and not for new innovative features. Sanyo's have been reliable and solid phones for the most part over the years and that is why people will keep buying all these new models. They appeal to the common people, similar to the way the RAZR is touted and sold by the other carriers.

stop hating on sanyo some people like the look and a bug free phone. I for one dont want a phone thats thin because i have hands like a man not a girl lol!!! and if you drop a thin phone vs. and thick phone the thin phone will break quicker. I had moto, sony,lg, and samsung and there nice phones but sanyos are bug free. looks wont sell me a phone it's what it can do.

I like where this Sanyo is going but as far as Power Vision phones the Sanyo's seem to be lacking lots of features, some of which aren't even major but make a difference. Both the 9000 and 7500 had no BT or External Media Playback Controls. The 9000 had miniSD and now the 8400 (according to info gathered from posts) has BT and a microSD slot but still no external media controls from the looks of the pictures. Also no mention about A2DP profile for BT. To me Sanyo is still a step behind from the Korean manufacturers like Samsung and LG. The only thing Sanyo has going for them IMO is a solid build and usually no major bugs. When they do something they (typically) do it right.

Like I mentioned before to someone, the Korean manufacturers stuff these phones with features but they don't seem to be greatly implented or work as well as promised. I do have to admit that I am really liking the FUSIC but its external speaker lacks decent sound volume, especially for a music focused phone. Haven't played with the FM transmitter but its a nice extra feature to have which compliments the fact that the speaker isn't the greatest.

If the 8400 had external media playback controls and stereo BT then I would consider it higher amongst the PV phones but it seems as though Sanyo is probably trying to get more into the low to mid-level PV phone. If you think about it the 8400 is really just like an A920 with perhaps a larger screen and external antenna but lacking external media controls or even better a non-rugged 7500 with expandable memory and BT. I'll admit that while I am slightly impressed I am still waiting to be "WOWED" by Sanyo.

true on the other hand Most of Sanyo phone have readylink. not many other companys are making cell phone with readylink service i think samsung has one phone that has ready link while 90% of Sanyo phone are ready link. so i guess Sanyo have 2 aims. making an walkie talkie phone with some decent uptodate feature that most phone come with for the cooperate and buisness world and making the smae phone useable for the everyday mid-class users.

But hardly anyone actually uses Readylink do they? Seriously, RL is not the future with Sprint, is it? So why invest your design energies in it instead of other more desirable features? example, how many Vi2300s out there for example actually subscribe to readylink? I would venture to gues it is in the single digit percentages. For the most part i would think people buy Sanyos for their reliability as phones, not for RL.

okay...here's my thing. why can't anyone make a phone with great reception, good internal and external screens, a status LED, 4900 style battery life, and a good clear internal ear piece and external ringer that's loud as hell and still clear with no distortion. Screw the cameras, screw mp3 players, screw gps...afterall, this is a phone! the 8300 was so cheap, a sad moment for sanyo, with it's buzzy, tinny external speaker and throwback earpiece. Old style hinge but no click!! The 8300 is the only Sanyo phone relesased since 2004 besides the 200 that I haven't used, and for a reason...it was never worth it.

The 9000 blew me away because of its quality audio components and the excellent build. Hopefully the same level of quality will be present in this 8400. Otherwise it's another mass-market wannabe.

The 65K QVGA from the Katana would make sense to me. I finally saw a Katana live and in person today and I must say although nice, the screen isn't as bright or as rich as the 5600/9000 screens. Being an 8000 series, I don't think they would use the 9000's screen, but a lesser one from an already mass-produced model. I noticed this too.

Me too! I been around the world with GSM phones: Razr v3, v3i, v635, Nokia 6131, Samsung D600* among others and have researched and played with a ton of others and I still can't find anything that resembles a well-built Sanyo. Plain and simple.

A lot of people look at Motorola's from afar and fall in love, but looks are only skin deep! (or shell/casing deep in this case). The UI in all their phones are SLOW and CLUNKY, very annoying to anyone who has used a Sanyo or Samsung. They do have some advantages, with the super long battery lives and ability to switch phones on a whim.

But I do miss Sanyo and I'm putting my faith once again in them. My contract with T-Mo ends in Feb. 2007. I hope they release the 9100 by then and that it's all we expect it to be.

*On a side note the Samsung D600 is a tremendous phone with a lot of features that all work amazingly well, especially the 2MP camera. Don't know why we don't see a CDMA version of the Samsung slider series.

As long as Sanyo doesn't forget there are alot of people out here that require high quality speakerphones.......and that their speakerphone raises them way above the pitiful, (except for the EOL Sanyo 7500 still in stores only) current Sprint PV phones. Then everything will be fine. Sanyo/Sprint needs to leave the ready-link feature in place, that mandates them to keep the large speakerphone speaker.

Please don't fall into the trap of having a speakerphone feature on a phone and it being worthless!

Well, I felt I should throw my 2 cents into this convo.

The 8400 (from the specs/pics here) is going to continue the tried and true tradition of bringing high-end features, into lower-end models. The 8100 was $200 when it launched, bringing a camera phone into Joe Smoes price range. The 8200 followed the same by adding a VGA cam, and readylink, the younger brother of the 5500, and so on and so forth.

Its a smart business model. The people on this forum wouldnt be satisfied if Sanyo made a personal phone for them, to their exact specs, because in the end, there will always be something better, something newer, which they will feel their current phone lacks.

This phone will bring the music store/BT into the hands of Joe everyman, who likes Sanyo phones, who's used Sanyo phones, since the days of the 8100.

No one likes the design, but you know what, here's a reality check, it will sell, and it will sell by the thousands.

I'll admit that while I am slightly impressed I am still waiting to be "WOWED" by Sanyo.

I actually hate those external media controls. I'm glad the 9K went about external controls the way they did. I really don't like anything on the front of my phone besides a screen. I miss my 5500, cause its camera was on the back.

I prefer blue backligthing on the keypad but as long as it's not pink I don't really care. It would be nice if Sanyo would make the keypad backlighting bright enough so that it lights up the entire keys like the Fusic instead of just the number. I know Yi could changne the led's but I wouldn't have it done just because I think it voids the warranty and I don't let anyone touch my phone let alone take it apart. lol

Irrelevant. This is 2006.

Design and function are not too much to be asking for in the same package anylonger.

I understand Sanyo can't design any new phones due to their immense cash crisis, but my god, at least use the Katana's design further...The 8100/8200 form factors are simply too ancient to be used halfway through 2006.

And by the way, the phone that is bringing music store/ev-do into joe shmoes hand is the $99 Samsung A900:lol:

Offline I can still get in touch with him though ;) . But I wouldnt really get him to change the LEDs on the 8400. I would just go without.....the phone :p . Back when Yi was doing the mods most phones still were using the "funky green", but now adays the phones dont need to be modded as the keypads are already cool . I am very picky when it comes to the key pad looks, so any phone that comes down the pike that still uses the "funky green" "I" gotta pass on :p . Yep, the man who is Vice Prez. of Brooose's Elite Phone Whores Club said it....I gotta pass on a phone  (Damn that hurts)

I don't know if I will end up with this phone. There's not much difference between it and the 7500. My mom's been wanting one of those Bluetooth Headsets lately, so maybe she'll pick it up.

Those ugly green LEDs make my decision to keep the 7500 much easier. ;) I will admit, keypads look much better these days. The keypad on my 8200 was atrocious! Good phone though, which is what matters, right? :)

Yes they do make "colored c.i.d" screens.

The front screen is obviously the same as the Sanyo MM-7500.

I've been PM'd about the inside of the phone. It's basically the 3100 with a 2.0 inch QVGA screen. Rumored to be 65K screen like the Katana, not the 262K color like the 5600/9000.

All i have to ask is why? Why why why? Is it because of how it looks?

When my gf and I were shopping for phones late last year, early this year, we looked at everything Sprint had to offer. Did she immediatly go for the phones that "looked good?" Hell no.... she kept asking about ones that had features she wanted. She wanted the memory card. She wanted readylink. She wanted a phone that would do everything she wanted with out shelling out $500 for a PDA phone. She wanted power vision, she wanted a good camera. When I asked her what she thought of how the phone looked, she said (and i quote) "I could give a rats ass about how it looks. It's got everything *and* the kitchen sink!"

I can understand why people are getting upset or pissy when a EV-DO phone is delayed right now because the EV-DO phone selection is/has been limited for awhile. However I would rather have the phone pushed back and come out with less bugs then have it come out to early and full of bugs.

That's easier said than done for some people. Personally I'm not one of them. I want to take another look at this phone. I happened to run on the Sanyo rep in the Sprint store. I do NOT like the keypad. Seemed to be well lit. It's basically the 3100's keypad... but the screen sure looked nice...
