View Full Version : 3100 - reception & camera probs? Also, I want my alien back.

Okay, so I had a Sanyo 8100 that lasted me for three years before giving its final death rattle in the form of a broken screen. Thus, it was time to get a new phone. So I hopped my candy ass over to the friendly neighborhood Sprint goons, and procured an LGsomethingorother that proved to be most unsatisfactory in that 1) the ringer was a tad too quiet for my liking (read: estimated decibel level at max volune was less than or equal to that of a sonic boom), and 2) the cursed thing wouldn't interact with mbuzzy which, to me, is a irredeemable mortal sin in the world of cellphone features or lack thereof. So I took the thing back, explained "It wasn't quite living up to my expectations" (because "I can't use it to wake the dead and download videogame midi files I hacked" tends not to win too much sympathy at Sprint headquarters for some reason), and ended up trading the thing in for a Sanyo 3100, which has thus far proved to be a fairly groovy piece of technology, save for the following:

1) Reception. This thing drops more calls than Moe's Tavern, and it's got a worse receiver than the Dallas Cowboys. During the course of a 3-hour conversation I had last night, the phone all-out lost the signal twice and "blipped out" more times than I can even count (as in, it cut to dead air for a second or two, then cut back, as opposed to all-out disconnecting). It also seems to completely lose signal strength on a fairly regular basis, as I've pulled it out to check the time on several occasions since I've had it and often see the "looking for signal" message on the screen. Suffice to say, this is not of the awesome, and I am wondering if my phone is defective, or if lousy reception is simply one of those "surprise bonus features" that comes standard with this model. (For comparison purposes, the 8100 I had for three years only behaved like this if I was trying to use it in bomb shelter or something, and the LGwhatchamacallit didn't have any such issues during its short lifetime in my possession.)

2) Camera. My pictures are orange. Very very orange. I took a picture of myself sitting in a hotel lobby last night, and not only was I orange, the wall was orange, the couch behind me was orange, and the drunk guy in the background was orange too. I can assure you, I am not normally orange, and while I can't vouch for the drunk guy, the tint to the picture was decidedly orange, which won't do at all, because I don't want to send picture shares to my online friends who have never seen me before and have them leap to all sorts of embarrassing conclusions about potential skin disorders I may or may not have due to the fact that I appear to be a lovely shade of tangerine. I tried screwing with the "light source options" or whatever, and this seemed to significantly help with future pictures possessing unhealthy levels or orange taint, but I would still like to know for the record if this is a glitch in my specific phone, or if the standard 3100 phone mode is indeed "bright friggen orange" unless the lightsource mode is manually altered before the taking of each individual pic. (And yep, I'm sure I didn't accidentally have the orange tint dealie turned on. I did some experiments - turning that on just made the pictures even MORE orange. Though the aqua filter tended to neutralize it a bit. Hmmm. Rainbow Brite, eat your heart out.)

3) I want my alien back!! You know, that cute little green guy from my 8100 that would appear in his flying saucer and start boogie boarding across the screen whenever I opened my phone? I miss that guy! Is there any way I can download him to my new phone? Yes, I realize this is probably the most random question ever, but I miss the little dude! He was quite cute, and served as a fond reminder of my homeworld.

Aaaanyways, thanks a ton for any help anyone can provide. Hell, thanks a ton if you're even still READING this. *scurries off to bed*

The 3100 doesn't have a buddy (alien) either?

Note To Sanyo: We want our Buddies back!

Hi, I Just happen to have a sanyo 3100 and the first thing I noticed was how Orange the pictures are..
Its worse with pictures taken inside.
Ive had my best luck with pics taken outside.
I had a red sanyo 8200 and it had a buddy, but it was a snowman.. even tho I like the blue color of my 3100 I sure the little animated snowman..
I wish there was a way to download them.
Also this model sanyo doesnt have any fun frames like my 8200.
All in all it seems a tad bit more generic than my 8200 which I really miss.

I got rid of my 3100, my wife was pregnant and I was dropping calls, and the reception was bad...I ended up with a Katana..because I couldnt wait around for a m1 or the 8400 (which I am really mad about). Retentions understood about missing calls, the reception deal and gave me the katana with no questions asked...I had to pay like 10 bucks overall I think. I really wanted the 8400 but I guess I cant really complain. I I just wanted a phone with better reception, not sure if this is it but....<shrug> Maybe something better will come out next year.

I have partents an co-workers with 3100's who have nothing but nice things to say about the 3100 reception. I can't comment on the camera other than i have never had a sanyo with a stellar camera. They have all taken toy quality pics imo. Anyone else feel the 3100 is worse in the reception area than others in the sanyo line?

How did you get a katana for only ten dollars?? was the 3100 insured?? and thats why?
Does it happen to have fun frames or a buddy???

I had the red sanyo 8200 which I loved and intended to keep untill the dog decided otherwise.. hence the blue 3100.

Um, I kinda ***** the girl from retentions down to about 10 bucks. I worked 3 jobs at the time...couldnt afford anything else. I so bad wanted that 8400 but they didnt have any at the time...the 3100 had such crappy reception in the gym....
sorry about using the jew reference, esp around the festival of lights time.

Anyways Festivus for the restivus.

Hi.. Don't worry about the reference.. I'll will say tho you must be very convincing.. Do you like the Katana better than the 3100?? besides the reception being better??
If I thought I could get a pink Katana for a deal like you made I'd jump at it.
I can relate to money being tight..
I'm not sure but I dont think I've ever spoken with Retention.
I wanted to upgrade my red 8200 to a redder 8300, then along came the red razr which Id love to have.
I am partial to the red phones.
Sorry for being so nosy about your phone.. LOL.. and thanks..

I dont mind my katana...I hate the ringtones, because you cant hear them whatso-ever....very quiet. I keep my phone on vibrate 24/7
The reception goes in and out...it doesnt stay consistent. I think its a tad better then the 3100, its a step up. If you like the bluetooth etc..its a better phone. I wish I had vision etc so I could put somethings on it. I really wanted the 8400 but like I said, it never came out until like a month later. I dont think I was a smooth talker betty crocker or anything...just persistent. I have a friend at the bar I work at that is a 3rd party sprint dealer, and I am working on him to see about getting a refirbished 8400...because I cannot hear my katana at all, I get alot of dropped calls in my area as well....I dont care that the camera isnt good on th 8400 etc...I just want a phone with consistent reception, good loud ringers, and is durable....

Hi,
Not having good reception must be real inconvient.
Do you think its the phone, or where your at?? and if you called sprint wouldnt they at least replace it with another??
Even tho Ive had a phone for a few years theres still plenty I dont know phone wise and what sprint will do for you..
Ive never had blue tooth so don't know the advantages.
I've found little annoyances with this 3100 too.. sure doesnt compare to the 8200
It must of been annoying for the 8400 to come out after you already gotton a phone. Isnt that how it always seems to go??
Sounds like what happened with me with the Red Razr..
I don't think I've even seen a 8400 yet.
I hope your friend is able to help you out, that would be great. Good Luck..

I spent more time talking on it since this thread started. Reception and call quality is fantastic. Only downside I can see is that like most other sanyos, it's a bad roamer, in some areas.

That's the only reason why I've ever thought of the 8400.
