View Full Version : What is so special about the Sanyo 9000?

I just don't get it. No offense to the people that own this phone. But what is the allure of this phone? It is a discontinued phone. There is not Bluetooth. There are no stereo speakers. And it is just an ugly phone. That silver and blue is hideous.
I don't get it.

no bugs=no frustation. smart t9. when pic mail was working perfect when most samsungs were not. louder speaker, and better reception.

It's a trouble free phone with a QVGA screen, memory slot, awesome camera/camcorder. The looks of it are not the best but most Sanyo fans prefer function over form and the 9000 delivers.
Hideous is the phone in your avatar. I had a 6700 for 10 days. That's all I could take. Good for email and texting. Everything else about it is garbage. Leave Window's for computers, not phones. It should be called the PPC-Reboot.

I agree. That is why I traded my 6700 for a Blade + cash. I should have the Blade tomorrow. Then the 6700 will be removed from my avatar. In fact...maybe I will change sooner. :)

If your a heavy phone user, I hope you don't mind having to charge your phone a lot because you will haft to do that with your blade. I suggest probably picking up a extended battery if you don't mind the extra size and how it makes the phone look.
I had the 9000 when it first came out then got a blade then got a 6700 then got a Fusic. I really like the Fusic but I had to get my first one swapped out because it turned off when I closed the flip and now my second one is doing things my first one didn't do. I look back and remember I never had any problems with the 9000. The 9000 is BIG for a flip phone but it's a good bug free phone, I regret selling mine.

You may be charging that A900 more then the 6700. Should have traded for the A920 and cash. That's a way better phone.

I've never had a need or desire to use BT, so the lack of it is not a big deal to me. The 9000 is a rare phone that you just don't see, and that is the appeal to some of us. Yeah it is big but solid. It's performance is phenominal. I could go on and on but the only way to really understand the 9000 obsession is to use one yourself.

im frequent on my phone and it goes all day. the phone is not ugly. infact it reminds me of my friends celica gt. silver with blue tears down the side. the phone is perfect in everyway. i only thing it doesnt have is bluetooth(which i tried and didnt like it) but the phone is hot and can do everything. i make my own ringtones, wallpaper, screensavers, and set them how i like it. i can hear my ringtones as far as a bluetooth. screen is very clear and the camera almost compares to a 2mp. i use the flashlight when the power goes out. i get signal everywhere. and its better then any phone out there. samsung is a good brand but on gsm. on cdma it sucks. the 920 speakers suck. the 900 bluetooth sucks. and there all bugs and menues are slow on all and fusic. so thats why and dont hate, appriciate

from a thread i created march 20, 2006:
The long journey to the 9000
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
its everything and more, from the 1st time i heard the 5600 drown out my radioshack store by a customer, i knew that was the phone for me. as loud and nice exterior looking as it was, it had to be mine. i was obsessed with it. i went to the sprint store, took pics of their display of it with my vm4500, and took prices of the price tag with my cam phone also. stored the display phones pic as my backgrounds on my vm4500, with the 5600 opened when u opened the vm4500, and with the 5600 closed, when u close the vm4500. i printed out the price tag for the 5600 at radioshack and carried it with me with my business cards in my front shirt pocket every day for like a year. catalog # 170-1632, $279 with a 2 yr contract, $429 outright.
i placed bids all over the place for them on ebay. while doing so one time, i got emailed by a ebay member FROM ROMANIA not having an auction for one, and saying that he had one for $200 western union he would sell me. i couldnt believe my eyes, i sent the money right away, $200 + the western union fees, of like $13 more. gave him the money order confirmation # he asked, for and waited for my phone. he said that he accidentally sent out 2 phones, and they were being held at ups/fedex or whatever and that i had to pay for both phones before he would release the hold on the package, and that i could pay for both, get both, and keep both, or send one back and get my money back. so i like a dumbass, sent $200 + the western union fees again, for the 2nd phone also. after i gave him the money order confirmation #, i never heard from him again. i was heart broken, my 5600 looked to be not meant for me. i was beyong sad. but i was still determined. the 9000 later came out, and i thought it was ugly for a while, and loved how awesome the 5600 exterior looked.
well working at radioshack, we switched to cingular from verizon as of jan 1st. all corporate owned stores switched, that werent already carrying cingular. there was a contest that the top 3500 sales associates and top 1500 managers in the USA that sold the most motorola only phones, (v557 / v551, and razr v3) win a brand new cingular locked black v3 razr. well i won one, and was like ok, now i have 9000 bait. so as most of you know, i threw it in the trading post, and was like monty hall as one person said, with the lets make a deal lines. no bites 2 like 2 weeks, im gettin down on myself and all, then i get a pm from a great person rquinn that said he would sell me a 9000 for 225 shipped. im like 225 shipped? that seems low, whats wrong with it. hes like nothing at all, would you like for me to sell it for more? im like NO, thats perfect, i will take it. i tell him about the razor i have, and we decide to trade the razr and $100 for his 9000 with a 512 card.
my 9000 finally came saturday morning, and words cannot express my love for this phone once i got it. i loved it, and petted it, and called it sam, it has been my pretty furry little friend. *looks over at pretty little 9000 and winks* its so loud, t9 learns, and can add words, its heller loud, the screen is amazing, i have readylink back, its gods gift to phone nerds like myself, did i mention its heller loud?, i also have the my buddy back, like my other sanyos had. (bad a920, shame on you). my a920 now is reduced to a phonebook / 512 mb ipod video er 512mb ipod shuffle with a screen. it dont hold a candle to my 9000. except for bluetooth, but im gonna hook my adapter to my 9000 and listen to my mp3s and sirius wirelessly through one of my 5 bluetooth headsets, yes i know im a nerd for havin all those. but still, the a920 dont even have ftp via bluetooth, so the bluetooth on the a920 isnt superior really. but yes, this phone is everything i had hoped it would be and more. im very happy with it, and wouldnt change it for anything in the world....well maybe a ppc-6700, but then , i would still wanna keep my 9000 as the smaller phone, since the 6700 is the big fold out keyboard phone.

Speaker phone Actually works like a real SPEAKER PHONE!
Loud ringers You know all that hype about "ringtones adults can't hear"? Well, none of them have a 9000. You can hear the ringer anywhere in your house.
Vibe This actually works! It's not a baby mosquito pretending to be cripple for workers comp. It's real and it works.
Ear piece Loud & clear
Camera Wow, where do I begin? Zoom function actually zooms in. The little flower/mountain setting works wonders, you can get right up in on something and it will be clear. Low light photos work wonderfully. Settings for beach, snow, etc actually work. When you push the button to take a photo, you don' thave to wait and be perfectly still for 3 or 4 seconds. You take push a button on the 9000 and tada! You got a photo.
Memory 16 mb? 32? 64? 128? 256? 512? 1gb? 2gb? 4 um... not yet but in the future.
Screen Best I've seen. Nothing compares.
Alarm I didn't realize how important this feature really was, until my 9000 was broken. You can set an alarm and even if the phone is off, it will power on and the alarm will sound to whatever noise/ringer you want.
GPS Unlike the Samsungs, GPS programs actually work with this phone.
If Jesus needed a phone, he'd use a 9000!
Oh, Samsung people love to throw the bluetooth card to us 9000 users. Funny, but their phones don't have bluetooth either. I mean it "has it" but it rarely works. THe one single flaw with the 9000 is lack of bluetooth.

When you have a sanyo you have good reception. Signal strength is great and you can play music and download music and have ACC ringers and just know that you have a good phone thats made by a good company. (But they drop the ball on the Katana)

my treo pissed me off this morning. it didnt ring, and i missed a very important phone call. im switchin to my 9000 here n a few. and stayin on it while im on vacation the 22-28 cuz i need a smaller "more reliable" phone with ringers that can wake the dead, and are great as a alarm clock.

They didn't drop the ball on the Katana. It was not made as high end phone. It's a thin entry level phone. It's their thin/bluetooth test. They will make a high end version.

One of my friends recently bought a new 9000 on ebay and absolutely loves it. He's had several phones over the years including the Sanyo 7200. I had a chance to use the 9000 recently and the 9000 users are correct, it has great sound, a great display and great reception. I've noticed people are frequently stating the phone is large. One could ask compared to what? Well the comparison seems to be compared to the micro midget phones, IMO the 9000 is not large, not at all. Its just not tiny. Thats all. :)

I also have a 5600 in my collection of Sanyo's. I'll add to that. I wish the 5600 buttons could control the media player with flip closed like the 9000 can. Actually this is my wife's wish list since the 5600 is hers. Also it doesn't say the name of the band or song on the external screen like the 9000. Only says "Playing Audio".

The 9000 is by far the best phone I have ever to have had the pleasure of owning since I have been with Sprint since 1998. You see I call my 9000 my Blackberry because I have this free email program call Flury mail and it handles all pop3 email accounts and it kind of works like "push email" for me. And oh yea...I primarily also use Ready Link...and the audio of RL will put most Nextel phones to shame. I can watch full lenght movies on it while traveling there AINT nothing out there to replace my 9000.

One wonders with Sanyo's current fiscal health........how that will affect the introduction of the 9000's replacement. Plus whether it will even be on the same quality level as the 9000. Sanyo's always been my favorite of the Sprint phones and with the current "high end" PV lineup of Sprint phones, it is now, more than ever. :)

You are a complete idiot. You are going to sit there and tell me that the A900, A920, A940, A960, and A640 all do not have Bluetooth?
The "one single flaw of the 9000" could be summed up into many things...Huge design, no stereo speakers, no external media controls, an external antenna, no sort of wireless picbridge, no sort of wireless headset use, no sort of wireless phonebook exchanges, etc. etc.
I actually like the 9000 for many things...it's nice rainbow LED, the nice looking display, the fact that it has nice sounding ringers, it's good rf and battrey life, and most importantly, it's nice speakerphone...
But give me a break. You are a complete blind fanboy by the outrageous claims you make.

Didn't see it mentioned, but this phone has amazing standby time. It's sat on my dresser for two weeks before needing another charge. Compare that to newer "stylish" phones like the A900 that you've got to recharge almost every night, even with minimal usage.
As others have mentioned, the 9000 also has excellent RF, a great earpiece, and a top-notch mic.
The 9000 obviously lacks in the areas of size, Bluetooth, and style, but as a reliable and functional landline replacement, it's hard to beat.
Unfortunately, mine got crushed while traveling so I'm back to a 680 while I wait for the 9100. In designing the 9100, I hope Sanyo keeps its priorities straight -- and focuses on reliability, bug-free operation, good battery life, great standby time, excellent RF, and crystal-clear voice quality. All of these are more important than fancy music features.

the 9000 is one of the top phones for sprint obviously, my only gripe is the 5600/9000's hinge design does not make it easy to grip for long talks. if the 9100 improves on that, has a little cooler outer styling, 2MP camera, BT and all the goodies then it will be the top dog and people will come back to sanyo en masse.

Tuolumne is back again. Tu, it drives you nuts to see a thread like this so much that you had to sign up on here for the 100th time. Jealous because an A900 thread would be a bash fest. Even from A900 users.

Aside from the form and features that are lacking in the phone, such as bt, which i would never use anyway. it does what it's supposed to with no problems. this is coming from someone who dealt with the blade for 7 months. they packed so many features into the phone, nothing worked seamlessly.

Also, what good is having a feature packed phone that works for only 15 minutes and that's provided that the features actually worked like they should. i'll never stray from sanyo again.

Isnt the 940 bigger and looks like #5's/Johnny 5's(Short Circuit) lil brother? If any cell phone now days is huge or heavy to anyone maybe they should get to a gym ASAP. I have had a Samsung, didnt like it, and a Startac flip which was ok I guess. Sanyo just makes the phones I like.

Thats for sure, the 9000 is not large! Also one can see what has happened with the phones so small there is no room for decent speakers or other important components needed in a PHONE, they su*k......... :bang:

Anyone have a picture of the 5300 compared to the 9000? I'm just wanting to see the size difference. I'm guessing that the 9000 is bigger which to me is kinda sad since the 5300 is 3 years old. The 9000 isan't to big for me to use but I prefer a smaller phone. If Sanyo made it smaller they probally would've sold a lot more.

I agree on the size issue but Sanyo had no problem in the sales department for this unit. They should have made more than 50,000 units.

And you know this how??
The 9000 was actually discontinued because it was an extremely poor seller. I cannot believe that anbody in their right minds would thinkthe 9000000 had any chance against the mm-a90000000....puuhhhhleeeeze.

well actually.. i believe it was discontinued because sprint had problems tracking tethering on it.... and it was sold to "espn" for there phone, so your saying... the 9000 isnt goinng to sell as much as the 900 because 1, when ppl come to thje store, they have NO idea how buggy the 900 actually is, 2, everyones wants that slim phone look, which OBVIOUSLY, sanyo did not make this phone to COMPETE with. they made it to be a high end (better quality) sanyo phone, which actually overpowers the 900 in every single way excluding bt and the interface. (which i admit, is quite cool). ask me this, how many 9000's have i seen in my tech room? ummm none, the hinges don't break, the camera doesnt fall out, the phone doesnt lock up, the keypad doesnt stopn working, the bluetooth doesnt disconnect every 15 mins, and there hasnt been 4-5 sw updates for it to TRY to correct the buggy crappy sw of the 900!

Huge? Compared to what? A Blade? Yes, if you compare it to a blade it is huge.
Stereo speakers? What are you going to do with a stereo speaker on a phone? THe Blade has stereo speakers, but they are not loud. Sure the ringer sounds good if you are the Bionic Man (see 6 million dollar man, Steve Austin, giving away my age) and have the bionic hearing, then yes, you need stereo speakers. But for the average person who wants a LOUD ringer and a LOUD speaker phone, one single speaker that works will is far better then two that work like corn turds. Think about it? Stereo speakers on a phone? If they're not loud, what purpose do they serve?
No external media controls? Get this phone, play with the buttons while the phone is closed and then tell me there are no external buttons. Volume is on the side, and the .))) button on the side plays the next song. Sure the Blade has external buttons, but with 50 mg of space, you'll need the repeat button for your 3 MP3 songs.
External Antenna? BFD. We're used to them already. Every phone since the 80s has had them.
Wireless pictbridge? EMAIL! Want to send the photos to your laptop? EMAIL! How much more wireless you want then email?
Wireless headset? THe one flaw. THe Samsung blade suffers from the same problem. Sure, you can get a BT headset to work, but does it really work? Look at all the threads of "which headset works with the 9000" then tell me if it "really" works.
What outrageous claims? Did it say it had a BJ button? Did I claim it saves you from alien abduction due to it's magnaforce design with hidden codes? Did I say it wards off demons?
Speakerphone kicks butt. Camera kicks butt. All arouond features plus the fact that is has removeable media destroys all butt.
I was a very faithful Samsung fan until I got the gold 2megapixel slider, the 8 something. That's when I crossed over to Sanyo and I have seen the light. Hallelujah. Thank ya Jesus! I was blind! But now I can see! I was a slave, and now I'z set free! I was Fat and .... Hey, I can bench 396 pounds. Can you?

Seriously guy, this psychotic vendetta against the Sanyo 9000 is ridiculous. How many 9000 users have had one of the 'new' Samsungs with the stereo speakers, great interfaces, and BT? You aren't going to convert anyone here, so for the love of god give it a freakin rest.

Slow down Tu, you just made yourself look even more dumb. You know the 9000 and A940 were Sprints EVDO test phones. It was a limited supply only. They were discontinued before they even started selling them. The 9000 killed in sales. It was off the Sprint site very quickly. Hey, your Samsung A800 is still on there after what like 3 years. Talk about kick ass seller, NOT. You can handle all this good press, it's killing you. Go over to HoFo and defend Samsung's name there. Your not welcomed here ban boy.

A Radio Shack employee at one of my local stores said the same......., that is Sprint discountinued the 9000 primarily because they couldn't track people using it for that purpose.

I have had many phones in the past. The 5600, A940, A920, A900, back to the A920, 700p, and now I have the 9000, all in a year, and most of them in the last 5 to 6 months. ANYWAYS, after all those phones, only the 5600 and the 9000 work like they should, and have service like they should. And the screen is amazing, clear and sharp, so is the camera, it actually works like a camera. I love it and I will keep it only until the 9100 or something like this comes out.

Alarm I didn't realize how important this feature really was, until my 9000 was broken. You can set an alarm and even if the phone is off, it will power on and the alarm will sound to whatever noise/ringer you want.
My alarm doesn't go off if the power is off. unless there's a setting i need to change. I've seen other phones do this but not my 9000. Am I doing something wrong???
EDIT: ops, nevermind, i found it. the setting is off by default but you can turn it on in Settings->Others->Power On To Alert.

Never thought about using it for that.
I was roaming the other day, and a call came in and it still showed the name and number. I had never seen that before on any of my phones.
