Trying to set up the DUN on my new Katana but keep getting "Connection Failed". I'm pretty sure I created the New Connection using the same settings that worked when using my Treo 650 for DUN. Has anyone else tried this? I'd appreciate any tips you can give me. I probably won't be using this much since I have a Wireless Card but I just want to make sure I can connect in the event that I need it for a back up.

Same result with me.....I think they disabled the DUN using #777 on the Katana. They have been doing that for a while now.

I spoke with a 2nd level tech and he did confirm that modem NAI is enabled by default on the Katana. This means that #777 will not work unless the allow PAM flag is set on the sprint side of your account. $39.99 a month, includes web access from the phone's minibrowser as well. Does not include text messaging or picture mail, that's an extra $5 each.
I don't know about everyone else, but $40/month is what I pay for my 5mbit connection at home and the Katana doesn't have EVDO (1xRTT only). Complete ripoff, Sprint.
It also took me 5 calls to *2 to even get someone who knew what PAM was. My suggestion is that if you want it, call tech support, play dumb and say you Connection Manager won't authenticate and get a 2nd level tech on the line to add the plan. A shame you have to do this, but apparently they don't train the reps in India on their PAM plans.

There should be a way to disable NAI on the Katana. you might have to call Sanyo Tech Sup for this though

Indeed, id love to find out how to do this. I took the PAM option because a sprint tech I talked to offered me $50 dollar service credit that I wouldn't have gotten otherwise, but from my point of view, its cheaper for me to activate my mm-7400 as a third line, and add vision to it for 10 a month, and use it the same way im using the Katana with my laptop right now, im hoping someone figures out a work around or some drivers come out that work, considering its probabally similar to other sanyo phones that work. Made sure I got my MSL code out of it as well, took a while of
bs'ing to get them to give it to me, but will be worth it if we can find an override.

Well, the with the Treo 700p you can get around NAI with PDANet, so I suppose a software workaround is possible with the Katana.
I am feeling the pinch of not having a modem that works anywhere on the sprint network now that I've cancelled my PAM plan. It was just too expensive for something that I use maybe once a month tops.
I'm sure there's a ##(code)# menu option somewhere on the phone to disable NAI, just a matter of time before someone leaks it (I hope).

For me, I simply decided to return my katana in exchange for an A900 , despite the things ive heard, so far im liking it, and there is an easy work around that disables NAI and allows me to do the same thing ive been doing since vision service came out. Now ive one katana and one a900, and ive gotta say that the a900 is much better, simply because it has so many more features, and when I tether the a900, I use a data cable that charges at the same time, so its great.

Me too. I wish Sprint offered a PAM plan by the minute or by the day (pay as you go type plan) because $40 a month for something I use so, so minimally just isn't work it to me. When I use it, it's generally just for basic e-mail and entertainment while waiting at the airport. Now I just use airport wi-fi pay per use services instead. It definitely was nice to know that I could have access anywhere, anytime though. I can't wait for a leak!

Well, they have the modem NAI locked down tight, and I mean *really* tight. I've even gone as far as to follow some of the instructions detailed here (http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=938352). Programming the tethered NAI field simply will not stay saved in the phone.
Switching the Mobile IP behavior to "simple" will authenticate, but then immediately return a PPP error.
I've looked high and low for some sort of code to access a hidden menu, even trying suggestions for other phones, but no luck. If anyone could help me out, maybe nudge me in the right direction, I'd sure appreciate it!

I'm just curious if you have your own dial-up access through a separate ISP will it work instead of using #777. 14.4k is fine for me since I rarely use DUN.

i dont think you would want to do that cause i think it will charge you 30 cents a min if you dont use the #777 and use another isp..someone correct me if i am wrong

According to what I've read, yes, there is a pay per minute charge to use CSD unless you have a really old pre-vision data plan. From my understanding CSD connects the phone to a modem at the CO that is capable of dialing an ISP, whereas 1XRTT (#777) is a direct PPP connection.
I used to use CSD all the time with my old Nokia 6185, back in the day. The old pre-vision data plan would pull peak voice minutes from my plan as well as get me for the $15 extra a month regardless of if you used #777 or your own ISP.
I like the new way better, but I'm not a big fan of this blocking tethered NAI bullcrap.
A little warning about using QPST 2.7 build 215 with your Katana....it seems to break using the "1" key to dial your voicemail along with resetting your lock code to 6789. There's probably a newer version of QPST that works better with the 6600...

Just got back from a trip to find my BT stuff waiting... only to discover the nasty NAI bit that you guys have been discussing above.
Since this is my first Sanyo phone in a long while, I was just curious... have Sanyo phones always had this NAI stuff enabled? If so, were there ways of disabling NAI with the other Sanyo phones?

I've checked around and it is only the newer Sanyo phones that have NAI enabled. I have not yet seen a way to disable it on Sanyo, only the Samsung has a hidden menu.
