After some research and experiment, I successfully connected my Motorola C290 with my notebook by USB data cable. I can edit/backup address book, upload ring tones, screen savers etc. I would like to share my experience since I can't find some details from other place.

Before you start, you should have these preparations:
1. USB data cable. This is the only connection method for C290. I used one mini USB cable came from my old MP3 player, it works. Unfortunately, C290 doesn't use the mini usb port to charge, so I can't use this cable as car charger...
2. Motorola phone tools 4.0.4.
3. If you installed some phone drivers before, you should use this tool to clean and reinstall right driver:

Normal install procedure:
1. Install Motorola phone tools (MTP).
2. Start MTP, connect your phone when prompted.
3. MTP will try to find the driver for C290. It can't find it even after live update(but I suggest you complete the live update, maybe my choice of driver come from live update too).
4. MTP should ask you to install driver manually, maybe after several failures.
5. Choose Motorola USB modem, select next, select "do not automatically detect the driver, select from a list", Next, then select Motorola CDMA, V323m. Finish, OK.
6. MTP will connect to C290, then you can manage the address book, use multimedia studio application(it's in the panel beside the phone picture. If you select CDMA generic driver in last step, you can edit address book, but the multimedia studio function will be disabled) to upload ring tones, screen savers. This application is rather smart, it will reduce the picture size automatically, but you should crop the picture correctly first.

If you have connected C290 with other driver before, but failed to use multimedia studio function, this is a shortcut to change driver:
click menu(which is a button on the phone picture, depends on your driver selection), set->general setup->communication, change modem.

Maybe you can try othe driver, I chose V323m based on this article:
http://motorola.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/motorola.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=11294&p_created=1135272506&p_sid=NBQRAXci&p_lva=&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPTEmcF9zb3J0X2J5PSZwX2dyaWRzb3J0PSZwX 3Jvd19jbnQ9MTUyJnBfcHJvZHM9MCZwX2NhdHM9JnBfcHY9JnB fY3Y9JnBfcGFnZT0xJnBfc2VhcmNoX3RleHQ9cGhvbmUgdG9vb HMgbXVsdGltZWRpYQ**&p_li=&p_topview=1

If you feel that the icon has been disabled in error, select your phone model manually (see instructions above) but choose the profile ending in "m" for your phone model. For example, a V710 user would use the "V710m" profile.

So I just chose one model looks like C290 and have a m on it.:)
