View Full Version : Considering a PDA... but is it really a brick in my pocket?

I've considered a PDA/phone for a long time, but the large form factor (and techical shortfalls) always held me back. With the PPC-6700 and Treo 700p out, I'd like to re-think this and see how you guys manage with the PDA.

Currently I keep a Sanyo 8300 in my pocket and my employer's BlackBerry 7100 on my hip. The BlackBerry is just thin enough that I can keep it in my pocket, but considering it's a naked device withoug a prodruding antenna, I'm having a difficult time imagining anything larger in my pocket.

And there's no way I'm even going to consider a belt clip. I want to be able to throw this in my pocket when I go out to the bar without any discomfort. But maybe the excessive bulge in my pants could work in my favor...

How do you Treo guys manage?

I carry my 700p all day in my jeans front pocket. It fits nice and haven't had any trouble taking it out to answer a call or for whatever. Surprisingly, since this is my first Treo, it is not bad at all to have it in pocket all day.

At first I loved the 6700 but after a few months I got tired of carrying it around because it pulled my shorts down. :hee: For some reason I tried the 700p even though it's about the same size of the 6700. I relized that I prefer flip phones because there more pocketable. I'm happy with the compact size of the LG 550. Hopefully Sprint will carry a nice flip pda soon. :fingers:

Oooh, that's a whammy... I'm also thinking of the LX-550 as an alternative to the PDA. It just depends how much I will miss E-mail relay and an organizer. Does the LX-550 have decent calendar, contacts and task management? I don't know about this, but it would be nice if everything syncs via bluetooth.

Depends on how tight your pants fit. If you wear sloppy pants then no problem. If you wear pants that actually fit properly, it's harder to get the phone in/out and it's a bit noticeable.

Go to the store and put one in your pocket.

the 700p in a skin case is actually still thinner than my Sanyo 8100 was...

Although I certainly don't consider the Treo 700P nor the PPC 6700 unwieldy they are definitely less pocketable than most 'regular' phones. I never even considered getting rid of my personal phone when I was forced to carry a PPC 6601 and subsequently a PPC 6700 for work; I just found both devices too bulky and to too 'PDA' for my tastes.

I've had my 700P for nearly 2 weeks and although it's not technically all that much smaller than the 6700 it definitely feels noticeably less bulky in the front pocket of my slacks. The Treo 700P is the first device I'd consider using for both business and personal usage. Although I despise the 'Bat Belt' look I generally carry my personal phone in my pocket and my pda/phone on my belt in some type of leather pouch/case. Unless I'm traveling on business the 6700/now 700P goes into the briefcase as soon as I leave the office!

In the end I still prefer a 'regular' flip-style phone to any of the 'Smart Devices' I've used. I'm currently trying to decide whether or not I should keep my 8300 or switch to a 550 Fusic. I've been playing with the Fusic for a couple of days and although I'm generally impressed I've been having a lot of Mac related connectivity issues.

As for using the Fusic, or any other 'normal' phone as my 'one' device I simply couldn't. The company I work for uses GoodLink for MS Exchange push thus I have to have a device that can either run GoodLink or take advantage of MS's ActiveSync Push. I guess I'm stuck using two devices for the time being!

I don't think a PDA would be a comfortable fit in my pockets. It all depends on personal preference, I guess. I know some people really dislike clips but I don't really mind them.

or wear pants that aren't skin tight O_o

seriously, if you can't fit a treo in your pocket, your pants are too tight.

There's a difference between being able to fit it in your pocket and being comfortable while it is in your pocket. The only way I could see someone not be able to fit it in their pair of jeans is if they were some weird emo person.

I have The Treo 650 and the Sanyo MM8300. The Sanyo would be my primary phone.

Now a Treo Flip Phone or slider phone version would be Cool to see and I would definitely consider purchasing it as an upgrade if it were really more compact but just as ergonomically functional as the current models.

I have carried the Treo in my back pocket on occasion when I had to run and quick get some pics of an office space for my boss. I have also carried it briefly on my belt with the rotating clip when I went out on our office grounds taking pics of the landscaping.

The sturdy, grippable, "body glove like" leather case shown below has a built in rotating belt clip feature. I purchased this case from my local Sprint store a year ago. Although i haven't had any incidents with this phone on my belt or in my pocket, I typically keep the Treo in my small handbag and would feel nervous carrying it on my person on a regular basis. Although I may not always use the Treo as much as my other phone this is like a mini computer so I am very careful with it.

Nice thing about the case - the phone never has to come out of it unless you need to do a soft/hard reset or change the battery for some reason. With this case & the belt clip I have not had any dropping clumsy phone injury incidients with this phone to date. See pics attached:

Zena (are you the warrior princess by any chance?), I see you have a flip case...how is it talking on the Treo with the flip on the case? I've always wondered what someone would look like holding a Treo to their face with a case that has a flip on it...does it ever get in the way?

:haha:

Yeah, and then walk out the store to see how good the reception is outdoors.

There's a difference between being able to fit it in your pocket and being comfortable while it is in your pocket. Good point..

I wonder how the Motorola Q feels in a pocket? It's thin but still big so probably not a lot of difference compared to the 700p. I just don't feel safe puting a pda in my pocket. As soon as Sprint gets a nice pda flip phone I'll be getting one.

From someone who had a sanyo 9000 and an Ipaq, I am absolutly loving the 650 and have a 700 on the way. It is a little bit bigger but considering functionality and the fact that I have consolidated 2 devices the form factor is not an issue. I usually keep it in my pocket but I do use a belt clip case when at work. It is a little bigger and heavier than most phones but for me it is worth it.

Hey Trevante, Yeah with a big "Z" hehehe...I get that a lot. Might as well have a little fun w/ it.:-)

The PDA flip case Cover snaps on and off at both ends so if I'm on this phone a lot I can easily snap off the cover. But, it is not too cumbersome to talk on the PDA with the flip case still connected at the top end and folded behind the front, as shown in the third pic, but let me remind you this is not my primary phone for voice calls. That would be my Sanyo Buddy. :-)
However, when it comes to taking a lot of position & angle varied pictures or video the cover can then sometimes get in the way. Then I'll just completely take off the protective cover.

Without the cover on, this PDA will fit fairly well in my back jean pocket, a little tight but it will fit.

I've baught one of the horizontal side pouch style PDA cases and didn't like having to unsnap and dig my phone out to use it, potentially hitting buttons or the screen or it slipping out of my hand... Didn't want to take a chance at damaging this baby although insured.

I especially like the case body for its secure grippability of this very Slippery PDA and the clear plastic protective overlay of the keyboard.

Maybe the next next upgrade Treo Model can have built in rubberized siding where that silver side strip is located??

I agree...should fit....

i went from an A900/BlackBerry 7200 to the 700p and had to adjust with the size...i also cary my 700 on my hip with the pouch case....

700's are great.....i will deal with the change.

As of of a few days I'm back to a regular phone and happy but who knows I change my mind a lot. lol I just can't get used to carrying a pda/cell phone even though I really like the features. :(
