View Full Version : Can you PAM & charge phone at the same time?

Wondering which phones, if any, allow you to tether to a computer for PAM (not PAM via BT) and charge the battery at the same time?

I prefer a phone that can do both PAM and charge simultanously via USB. But if no such device exists, next best is one that can PAM via USB and simultaneously charge via power adapter.

If there are any phones that can simultaneously PAM and charge over USB, does anyone know how much power PAM draws (assuming screen is off and no other functions are in use) from a laptop compared to the connection cards?

Thanks in advance!

Any phone that will charge via USB can be charged while it is in use (and tethering), as far as I know.

Nope, that's not the case. The Treo 650 for one can't charge via USB while being used as PAM. You can charge it and use it as PAM, but you have to use a power adapter to charge it.

I should have specified in my post that I am specifically inquiring about Power Vision phones (650 is not Power Vision).

Wow that's odd about the Treo. I know I can with my PPC6700 just fine, and all my Verizon phones were able to charge via USB while being used for data as well.

The A900 doesn't, hell, it doesn't even charge via USB when it's not used as a modem.

Do you have the USB that charges? I have both types for my 9000 but I do know that all USB cables do not charge...

I have no knowledge about the A900 and its USB cable so do not mistake me for being a smart ace. :)

When I set my 9000 up to tether I set it up with the non-charging cable so if I try to tether with the other (the one I did not set it up with) it does not recognize that cable. I did read when I set it up that it would be that way though. :indiff:

I think if you have a USB cable that is capable of charging the phone you are able to charge the phone and transfer data at the same time. But it has to be a charging USB cable, not just a data USB cable - there is a difference. I've seen some on ebay for about 15 bucks with shipping.

this is true.. i've actually seen USB cables for the A900 that will charge it while connected to the USB port.. (but u can't do anything else with it while it's charging, which sucks..)

You can't? I thought you'd be able to both charge the phone and transfer data - which is essentially what a PAM user would be doing - at the same time... If that's the case, it sucks out loud.

Sanyo MM-7500. I bought a charging USB cable on Ebay for $7 + $8 shipping (=$15). Works, i can charge the phone while using it as a modem.

Well this is my first post here, or anywhere, on the internet! Figured it was time to come out of the shadows... I wanted to help on this issue.

I have an A900 and the online materials said it came with as charging USB data cable. Mine did not. After calling I was told there were problems with it and the cables do not charge anymore. I was determined, since I got the A900 to use as "phone as modem" and the phone is not known for its stellar battery performance.

I found a company, www-dot-gomadic-dot-com , that makes a cable (I chose the coiled) that charges while using PAM. They also offer exchangeable tips and other options that are very nice. I got a tip for my ipaq and my wife's cell. I even got the AA batterypack accessory - just in case!

The cable that came with my phone is still in it bag, while I travel with the coiled-tipped-usb cable. Only have to bring one power supply when I travel. Hope this helps several of you on this post. I do not know how much battery power it draws from my laptop, but the laptop battery is a better source and I can still call after I am done!!!

I can verify that the 3 powervision phones from Samsung - the 900, the 920, and the 940 (all owned by either myself or the hubby) can be charged while in PAM use, if you're using a usb-charging cable, purchased seperately. It's not the same USB cable that comes with the phones.

I purchased my cables via gomadic. Great cables.

Cool deal! I have an a920 myself and while I'm not planning on doing the PAM thing with it, it's nice to know that there is a decent cable out there for it that will let one charge and transfer data at the same time. Hopefully when the tutorial on how to use the cable to put on ringtones, etc. is done I'll have an excuse to get it...:D
