Here are the basics... I want to have email with me all the time. I live in an area that does not have evdo but *should* this summer. I bought a 700p thinking that using chattermail I would be able to have my imap email "pushed" to me and be notified instantly when the mail arrived, without actually having to launch the mail app and check mail manually.
Here were my results. First, when in chattermail ALL phonecalls are routed straight to voicemail... arg! when on a phonecall and email arrives there is no notification. when not on the phone or in chattermail no notification of any kind comes in.
Am I just trying to do something that is not possible? Will evdo solve these issues? I really dont want to have my calls going to voicemail while I am in my mail app, and I really dont want to have to launch my mail app just to see if I have something new waiting for me.
Enter the blackberry. The 7130e was launched recently. I have heard of "true push" and apparently when you activate your blackberry you can go to a page on sprint and configure email to be pushed to your blackberry. Does anyone know if this will interrupt your phone service, or how this even really works?
I know I would be loosing features by going to the blackberry but at this point all I really care about is an easy email/phone machine, and as near as I can tell the 700p is falling a little short for me. Will I be happier with the blackberry?

EVDO will solve the problem. 1xRTT can't do voice and data at the same time. With EVDO, if you get a call it will kick you down to 1xRTT and allow you to take the call. You can't talk and surf at the same time, but at least you don't miss any calls while your surfing/emailing.
You can set the notification preferences in Chattermail. Also, be sure that you have the latest beta installed. I think it's b12.
You can also do BlackBerry Connect on the Treo 650. It's free if your company already has the BES software.

I will grab the latest beta and see if that works a little better. Just to clarify, when I am not on the phone and not in the email program it will notify me that mail has arrived. When I am on a call and an email comes in I dont think it is notifying me, even after I have ended the call, does this sound right?
Good to hear that evdo may help with the whole phone going directly to voicemail. Let me ask this: how often is chattermail polling my server to see if new mail is there? It would seem to me that without evdo that it might be likely that chattermail will be checking stuff in the background and I will be missing calls unbeknownst to me, does this happen?

As a long time 650/Chatter user I'd like to point out that although Bjork is quite right about the 1x/data thing, Chatter is so fast with IMAP that the connection is rarely "live" (e.g. blocks incoming calls) for more than a few seconds so the chances of you missing a call because Chatter is "active" is quite slim. Same goes for sending. Obviously, if you download a lot of large attachements, that will interfere but if we're talking about basic email messages...hardly any data used. It's really a great combo. So if you're just in a 1x area..no biggy.
Re: 700P, Marc (chatter developer) had repeated endlessly: you HAVE to use the latest version (and the betas are preferable) to get it to work on the 700P. His betas are usually pretty solid too, they were always the least of my worries.

I've also never missed any calls using Chatter, but I also don't get a bunch of large attachments. They're just regular emails. With 1xRTT, you're much more likely to miss a phone call when you're using Vision and loading a large webpage.
There's an option in Chatter to use the Attention Manager. Make sure that you've got that checked. You can also set your notification preferences there.

Welll with the latest beta installed I have had a much different experience. For the most part I am really liking chattermail now. Saving my sent items back onto the imap server creates somewhat of a delay when I am exiting, but I think that will be much better once evdo comes. I suppose I could just not store sent messages but that is a pretty nice feature.
As for battery life, can someone with evdo comment as to the battery life? Attention Manager and 1xRTT seem to suck up quite a bit which I guess can be expected.

Battery life on the 700p is a bit worse that the 650.

you do not miss a call when using EV-DO, you cannot use it while on a call, but you will still get the call.

Where do you get the blackberry connect software ? And, are you able to connect to the BES Server w/o having the Blackberry (40.00) plan? We have a BES server already, but from what I understand, the reason why you pay for the Blackberry Data plan is because all data is encrypted from your device to the RIM Routers.
Thanks,

Battery life on my 700p is about the same as the 650. I'm in an EVDO area. I'm sure some1 could force the phone into non-EVDO status to see if there's any difference, but it's pretty insignificant IMO.

BB connect software, as of right now, is bascially a hack for US carriers and only works on the 650. There is no data plan right now for BB as it uses your regular Vision access. However, if and when (and that's a huge if) Sprint finally does release it officially and actually support the software they most certainly will charge for it. So it's kind of a gamble right now but if you already have a 650, it's no big deal to setup.
