View Full Version : ActiveSync 3.8? What was so wrong?

Okay, I just have to vent. I've been getting the "There is no modem at above number" error while trying to connect to vision. Same thing happened Saturday, and it took a trip to the Sprint store, 1 hour, and a complete system reset to get it fixed. So I lost all my contacts, appointments, setting, tweaks, etc. So I thought today before I go back to the store, I'd bust out ActiveSync's Backup/Restore feature. Where is it? NO WHERE! It's gone! ActiveSync doesn't have a B/R feature anymore in V4.1. I'm freaking pissed! What a joke!

I don't get what was so wrong w/ 3.8 and all the versions prior to that. I had an Ipaq previously and loved the B/R restore feature, not to mention being able to Sync via Wi-Fi, which is another feature lost in 4.1. Plus I have more stability and connectivity issues w/ 4.1 than I ever had with any previous version.

Any ideas on what MS was thinking when they "updated" this software? It's a complete piece of crap? Can anyone share any benefits of the new software? I'd like to find a reason to like it, but thus far, it's nothing but a big heaping pile of dung!

I'm not going to get into the whole AS changes issue as it's fairly complicated but as far as contacts, appointments, etc. if you were syncing with Outlook via AS how did you "lose" those things? If I were to hardreset my device right now and re-sync with my computer, ALL my contacts, appointments, task, etc would be right back there. That's not a backup issue via AS.

The backup feature was always so-so anyways with AS. I've always used something like SPB Pocket backup, which you could have even "trialed" before this incident, backedup and restored everything for free.

also, the "no modem" thing will probably come back. Has something to do with having a live data connection, losing it too poor signal and not being able to reconnect. 9 times out of 10, simply cycling the radio through Flight Mode will fix it. Your hardreset (which, btw, YOU could have done in 5 mins) may or not resolve the issue but i wouldn't hold my breath.

next time, I'd read around a bit more. also, AS 4.2 beta is out.

You're correct; after Saturday I was able to get all my contacts, calendar, etc back after resyncing when I brought it home. It didn't save any of my applications, settings, or tweaks which are all time consuming to get back. Those are the ones I'm frustrated with losing due to the B/R feature being removed.

As for your suggestions on "fixing" the problem, I had read plenty of the suggestions posted here and other forums and sites. Cycling in and out of flight mode didnt' work, nor did any number of soft resets. As for the hard reset I am capable of that takes 5 minutes, I did that as well. All of these were done with 3 bars of service. According to the Sprint tech, there was a hard reset and a provisioning adjustments that had to be made, which I am not capable of. As for ActiveSync, I never had problems with B/R on previous versions. It always worked flawlessly for me.

I read plenty and tried all the suggestions offered, with no luck, unfortunately.

gotcha. well, I hope it works. I know if I cut my live data connection by switching a profile, I don't get my data back till a soft-reset, so I have to be careful to manually close my data connection.

The original reason for removing the BU in AS are varied. Mostly had to do with the fact that WM5 devies now use permanent memory, whereas on a WM3 device or less, if that battery died you just did a hard reset. So AS BU was much more important. Also, I think they had more issues with it than they wanted. SPB Backup works very well though.

I tried SPB's trial version. I knew I was doomed and had to do something. It didnt' work at first; restoring gave me an error w/ both the calendar and tasks. I tried it again, and only did PIM info and My Documents, and it worked great. The self extracting .exe files are nice. Thanks for mentioning it.

I took the phone back to Sprint and they fixed it again. So hopefully it won't continue to be an issue. I really do miss being able to sync via wifi. I didnt' do BU too much, but it was nice to have. Who knows, maybe one day they will bring it back. Thanks again for mentioning SPB.

NP. There are rumors that sync via wifi may come back but who knows. They reportedly took it out because of "security issues" for their corporate clients. Good luck :tu:
