View Full Version : 8300 chargers - Technical questions

Are there any electrical engineers or techs that can give some concrete guidance on the following?

I have seen posts that the 8300 uses the same chargers and accessories as a number of other Sanyo phones. I previously had the 4900 and 8100. I know that the charges will plug in to the phone and I am sure that they will charge them. However, I noticed that the travel charger included with my new 8300s look basically the same as my 8100 and 4900 travel chargers (they all are the flat Sanyo plug, not the barrel plug), but the specs are slightly different.

The charges have different model numbers:
4900/8100 - Model SCP-07ADT
8300 - Model SCP-12ADT

The input stats are the same :
AC 120V 60 Hz 7W

The output stats are slightly different:
4900/8100 - DC 5.4V 800 mA
8300 - DC 5.2V 800mA

This slight difference brings up a few questions:
Will the slight difference in voltage negatively affect the phones?
Would this only affect charging times?
Are the car charger specs likely to be different?
Is it safe to continue using the same car chargers I used for my 4900/8100?

Thanks,
Oak

I have the 8300, the VI-2300 and I had the 7400, the VI-2300 and it has the round plug, the 7400 has the flat, when I changed to my first 8300 it had the round plug but now i have the red 8300 and has the flat conector, when I was going to change the 74 for the 8300 I had the rep change the cargers so I had the flat one it originally came with and he said that the flat and the round are exactly the same, He didin't want to change the cargers, so after I looked at him he got scared and gave me the new one and kept the old one. I use mine to charge my friend's 7500 that is a round one and vice versa, I have never had a problem with batteries or performance. I'm sure it's the same thing diferent interfaces.

Thanks for the reply. I am sure that it will charge the phone, but am really concerned about the long-term effects of the additional voltage output from the older chargers.

and the EXACT same on I was going to ask. I have a GAZILLION 07ADTs around from swapped out 4900s and would like to use them with my 9000s which come with the 12ADT but I wouldn't want to damage an expensive phone or void the warranty. What say ye oh sprint gods? (that would be techs and engineers only please this time!)

sleepy,

For what it's worth, I posted this question in sci.electronics.misc and got the following reply:

"These phones all have an internal voltage regulator and inverter. If you are
out by a few decimal points it should be safe. What would be very critical
in your case, is the polarity. If the polarity is wrong, the phones will be
damaged!

As far as the current rating for the power supplies are concerned, these
match okay."

Based on nobody else out there reporting any problems that I know of, I am going to assume it is safe.

Thanks for the reply, it seems we're here talking by ourselves. I kinda ASSUMED that might be true, but I'd like a RELIABLE source I could hang my hat on, like a sprint tech. I remember being told someone at a sprint store that now the plugs were interchangable ( I believe he was referring to the barrel connector ones ) on ALL sprint phones, but i'm reluctant to damage an expensive phone with wrong power cord. I have an extra barrel 5.4 volt from an 8200 i'd like to exchange for a flat connection one and am going to check with sprint store further about power. I'll let you know what i find out, or maybe i'll talk with tech support or email the question directly to sanyo.
By the way we had a couple 4900s too, and because of replacements, have a ton of those cords too, so i'd like to know for sure.

I am surprised by the lack of replies, as well. Maybe I should have posted in the general discussion forum.

Anyway, I feel the same as you. I would like a more reliable or authoriative source. I did send an e-mail to Sanyo from their support page, but I have not gotten a response. I don't have any accessories with the barrel connectors.

I've been using both kinds of chargers (flat connectors and barrel) since we travel a lot, pretty much interchagably, on my and my wife's 2300's and can see no difference nor have we experienced any problems.

I don't know about that, but I did ask a Sprint tech if my 4920 car charger would work properly for my 8300 and he said there's absolutely no difference in performance. Reiterating another post here, the power to the battery is refined within the phone, so that minor variations, including spikes and brown-outs, won't damage the circuit board.
