View Full Version : Better sound quality w/ stereo headphone on MM-9000?

I haven't really found any discussions on this yet, so I'll ask.

I've read about the 2.5mm adapter you can get so you can use regular headphones on the MM-9000.

My question is does it change the sound quality using regular stereo headphones compared the the headphones/mic that came with the phone?

To me, mp3s sound a little high-pitched, especially at higher volumes. I know its not going to sound like an mp3 player or like a portable cd player.

Thanks for any input.

the quality is nearly the same while using an adapter to use "regular" stereo headphones, it is more psychological i think than actual degradation of quality while using the adapter.

Ok, this is what I did, I got a 2.5 adaptor, it was like $20 bucks, but it has a volume slider, and mic built in, so you can answer your calls without having to unplug your headphones to answer a phone call, and I got a MAXELL set of headphones, WITH NOISE REDUCTION, they run on two AAA batteries, but they last a while, and man, I guarantee you, the sound improves dramatically, it adds more bass, more volume, and reduces the noise from outside, so that's what I use, it's just my opinion, you should try it, anyways if you don't like it, save the receip, you can always return it, oh I got the adaptor from a verizon dealer, and I use the 5600, hope it works out for you. :tu:

That's where I got mine. My 2006 Impala company car has the IPOD hole in the radio. I play my 9000 through that sometimes. The sound is great because you can control volume from the 9000 and the car stereo. Its real loud.

I'd like to add my experience here.

When I first purchased my 9000, I was very excited to try out the MP3 player. Using only the included stereo ear-buds, it worked quite well to my suprise. However, on certain MP3's it would distort. I found that this is a problem with certain MP3's though. Upon playing the troublesome MP3's on my computer with good speakers, I found that the bass-heavy speakers covered up the distortion, but after hearing it on the 9000, I could also hear it thru the computer as well. So it was a problem with the MP3 itself in the end.

Other songs, that have a very wide dynamic range, play perfectly. To my experience, the higher quality the MP3, the better it sounds on the 9000, and it IS a noticiable difference to my ears! :ohcrap:

I just recently purchased one of these converters (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=9727658024&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWN%3AIT&rd=1) on eBay, and I have to say it works extremely well. Very solid connection between the phone itself, and just as solid between the 3.5mm jack and whatever you plug into it. So far, I have used some high-quality headphones (Sony, JVC, etc), a tape adapter for playing it in the car, a FM transmitter for playing in a car that doesn't have a tape player, and to a straight 3.5mm stereo cable connection for the stereos that have such an input. In all instances, the sound of the MP3's is significantly improved by the better, more efficient speakers.

To the OP, I'd say check the MP3 on a computer with decent speakers to see if the high-pitch is there. If it is, you know it's a problem with those specific songs. If not, I'd say get one of those adapters (I only paid $5.68 shipped, recieved it 3 days later) and see if that helps you out. Definately worth it in my opinion!

Good luck! :tu:

Could you perhaps post the part/SKU number? I went to a couple local RS stores, and they didn't have anything that I felt comfortable using with the 9000. They did have one large converter that was about as thick as your little finger, with the 3.5mm jack on one side, and the 2.5mm plug on the other. But I didn't want that to get jostled around and perhaps break something in the phone itself! The converter I picked up on eBay (see above post) has a short length of wire between the jack and the plug, allowing for some flexibility.

If RS sells something similar to that, I'd be interested in it, especially for the $3 price!

Thanks in advance....

headphones make a huge difference with portable players. the ones that come with phones/players universally suck. if you have a good player, better headphones will make it sound much better (the other side of the coin being, better headphones will bring out the flaws in poor-quality mp3s).

the best cheap headphones are Koss KSC-75s. For $20 bucks they sound incredible. However, you can hear all the background noise so they are not the best for loud environments.

I just got a pair of Creative EP-630 canal-type headphones that block out much of the noise (there are OEM (un-marked) versions all over ebay for around $20-$30 incl shipping). Used them for the first time on the way to work today with my 9000 and they sound great. Nice and compact too.

when you listen to music through headphones does music come out of both earbuds because with my MM-9000 music only comes out of one :irked:

are you using the supplied headphones or other ones?

if using other ones, it sounds like you might have an incompatible adapter (if it's from Radio Shack, it won't work).

the adapter needs to have 3 black bands on the male end. Can be found for cheap on ebay (search for '2.5 3.5mm adapter', and make sure it has 3 black bands and/or says '4 pole'), and some Cingular stores.
