Please post if you are able to get this new version using the phone's update software function.

Yep I was able to update the phone over the air-first time that I've been able to do that with this phone. Anyway, it searched for several minutes before it found the update.
Priority: medium
Maintenance update for the Sanyo SCP-8300 with Picture Mail and Multimedia Enhancements
After downloading the update and optimizing for it, it power cycled itself and then completed updating the phone.

Congrats. You are one of the very few who have gotten it to work. Still doesn't work on the one my friend has after repeatedly trying. Does your 8300 have the old red sprint logo or the new yellow logo on the front if I may ask?

updating my 8300 as I type with no problem. It is the first time something other than check again later appeared so I guess everyone should be able to do it.
What does update fix?

Added two new 8300s to my account. Updated one of them last night successfully, will try the other tonight. There was an announcement that the process would take about 8 minutes after the download, but the phone reset itself fairly quickly - probably in about 1 to 1.5 minutes. I now have software version 1.007SP.

That's not fair. I wonder why it still doesn't work on my friends 8300 here in Los Angeles?

Has anyone noticed what the improvements to picturemail are? Do sent pictures actually send directly to the phone now instead of having to use the web to view them?

Can I still get mine to update if I don't have the Vision Package? Everytime I have called *2, I get no where.

*2 can be next to useless at times. I suggest going into tools/extras---->update phone and see what happens. Either it'll update successfully or it'll fail and tell you to try again later. Either way, you haven't lost much time.

Mine doesn't work either... it just tells me how to update it at a later time, which is the standard message for when there is no update available. :td:

A question for all of you who can't get your phones to update. What version do you currently have and does your 8300 have the new yellow sprint logo or the old red (pre-merger) logo?
I think I've figured out the reason why it only works on some.

I've got two 8300s, one with firmware 1.004SP and one with 1.005SP. The one with 1.004SP didn't update, the one with 1.005SP updated...

Ok then I was right!!
The people who have the original batch of the 8300's with the old red logo and version 1.004 can't update their phones. This tells me that the newer 8300's with yellow logo and version 1.005 have the FOTA capability and the ones with the older 8300's do not. So it's crucial to have software version 1.005 before you can update to 1.007. Mystery solved!
Evan702

Yes, I also surmised that firmware 1.005sp added the FOTA functionality. I actually have two 8300s on my family plan-one with the old red logo and one with the new yellow logo. Both were able to update OTA. However, the older red logo'd 8300 did have formerly the 1.005sp software courtesy of an in-store update some time ago.
So go to your nearest Sprint store and have them take you from 1.004sp to 1.007sp and you should be to update OTA from now on. :tu:

It would be nice if it were that easy. However Sprint stores now charge $35 to do firmware updates.

WHAT! NO WAY, I mean it would be like microsoft charging for windows updates if they did it with holes they should fix them for free oh I'm posting reply right now before i get really pissed and say something worst

Yes it's true. Most stores will insist on charging a $35 fee to do any updates now. I strongly disagree with this new policy from Sprint considering most phones are buggy when they come out and the FOTA only works on some models and even those seem to be inconsistent sometimes.

what would be good is the chance of sending more than 10 sms at the same time, btw is there a hack for that?

or, another idea is, since we can send text messages to land line why not give us the option to choose the land line from the phone list. because i have to be going in the address book writing down the number the entering the number by hand GRR

Well here's my story - first I went to the local sprint store (I had 1.004) and they were going to do it for free, but I had to get to work so I left before they did it. Then, I came back and another guy said it was $15, or free if I had total equip. protection. So I asked to get that for $3 a month, but he said I'd have to wait and pay for it once, and also give them $15 initial inspection fee before the protection kicked in anyway. SO I left. Today I went back, talked to a nice lady and she did it for free no questions asked. It took about 45 minutes for some reason, but they only gave me version 1.005SP, not 1.007. When I say update it from the menu, it says no updates are available. What is up with that? Anyone know?

mine is currently updating right now and I have the 8300 with the new yellow logo. So we will see if anything different occurs but I probably won't even notice since I dont' use picture mail that often

Hmmmm... VzW doesn't even charge for software upgrades, although they love to charge you for everything else.
I will attempt to get this upgrade at my local Sprint Store, but if they want a fee to do it I can live without. My pre-merger phone with 1004 software including picture mail seems to work well enough for me for now. Esp. since no one can see any noticeable improvements with the upgrade.

so what do the updates to exactly, is it just the picture mail?

i noticed the upgrade makes picture mail a bit faster.
Say you were uploading a picture or sending a picture mail, and it goes to 99%, well mine alwys used to hold there for a long time.
Now it goes to 99% and then a few seconds leter its done.
Thats about all i noticed.
I updated my phone a long time ago one night with no problems btw.

I just took my two 8300s to the local Sprint store and told them I needed a firmware update for both phones as well a PRL. It took them an hour and they did it for free. I take my phone in every 6 months and it's always free of charge.

Because I think that 1.007 is an over the air update and not released to the stores yet. As long as you have 1.005 you can get 1.007 using your phone's 'update phone' function.
