PDA

View Full Version : I'm done with PDA's already.

I've had my 6700 for 11 days now. I did my first trip with it and I must say I'm totally done. A PDA is a PDA first and everything else comes in last. Reception in Georgia was horrible. Battery issues continue. I had to do a couple of soft resets due to it not going to the Today page. I just don't have the time to put into this thing. I love what the phone does but if my customer's can't get ahold of me then I'm wasting my time.

I'm waiting for the Sprint store where I bought it to open up so I can return it. Hopefully they don't give me a hard time.

I would like to thank the people in this forum for helping a noob. You guys are great. I'm going back to my Sanyo 9000.

Agree totally....i too am going back to a "phone" phone on my Sprint line till all the initial 700p bugs are worked out i decided.

The 6700 shouldn't really be used to gauge PDA phones in usability, being that WM5 is enough to drive one batty!

LOL, well i pretty much grew on mac's, im not a fangirl, and do not hate windows just because it is not mac. I hate how i have to get 3rd party apps (ad-aware, spybot; etc) to make it function well...but it is what it is, and M$ is working on it, albeit slow.

don't judge a smartphone based on the 6700, base it on a Palm OS phone because it's more like a phone AND a PDA rather than a PDA with that phone thing stuck in there too.

The 6700 is a garbage phone. It works fairly well as a PDA but that's about it. Only time will tell how stable the 700p will be.

Back from the Sprint store. Was 11 days into the 14 day trial with the phone so I got my full refund. Took my BT set back to Best Buy today as well. Trying to get my Seido extended battery ordered cancelled as well. If not I'll Ebay it.

The sad part about this phone was I wouldn't use it much. It was so bad that I would avoid using the phone part. It did everything else great. When my customers starting *****ing that they couldn't get ahold of me that was the final straw.

Since I hooked my Sanyo 9000 back up I've been on it constantly. Love the fact I can be heard and I can hear them.

When I went out of town to Virgina my phone wouldn't ring. I had battery issuse as well. I called tier 2 and 5 mins later my ring issue was fixed. It probably helped that I had a direct #. I was using prl 20016 which probably was the why the battery was draining fast.

I was going to put my 6700 up for sale a few days ago because sometimes I want to go back to a compact flip phone. I tried the 960 for a day and returned it because the display is tiny. I use the web a lot and the 6700 is the best for that. I'm using photo contacts pro which for me it makes calling people a lot easier and quicker plus fullsize caller I'd pictures. Also set all my contacts and applicatons for voice activaton. I relize now that if I did sell my 6700 I probably would regret it.

I wouldn't agree that it is garbage but I do think that it sucks as a phone. It is meant to be a pda and that's all. I did not like the sound quality or call quality at all. Also I didn't get the best reception and I usually get great Sprint service in my area.

Converged devices like the 6700 AREN'T for everyone. If you're not willing to put in a few hours tweaking it, you're probably not a good candidate. They aren't appliances, you can't just take it out of the box and expect it will be ready to go. Check back in a few years, maybe then it will be close.

The 6700 being a convergent device has nothing to do with it. It's just that the phone side is awful. The phone side of the 650 doesn't suck like it does on the 6700. Audiovox just made a crappy phone in the 6700. Maybe the 6800 will be better but it's looking like the 700p will be the closest to phone/pda perfection for a while.

The 6700 is a bad example because of the lack of physical keypad. So yes it REALLY is a PDA first.. even more so.. with WinMo on it, its more like a mini laptop first.

PalmOS is more like a phone.. which can be good or bad depending on what you like... but it also has a real keypad.. so i dont know that the OS itself helps as much as the real keys do. I know trying to answer a call on the 6700 was A) like bringing a brick to my ear, B) hard to get out of its case to answer, and its hard to maneuver it in your hand without almost dropping it, especially since its usually on its 3rd ring by the time you get it out and you are fumbling to answer it before it goes to vmail. And C) it was hard to dial.. not only was one hand near impossible.. but fat thumbs, and direct sunlight was a major issue. I ran some people off the road trying to dial on my old 6700 on a sunny day cuz i couldn't feel for the key locations.

Overall i think the Treo or even the blackberry that sprint has (which i never knew about) would be worth a try. I will be trying out the Treo 700w, but it will be an add-a-phone for use more as a mini computer rather than a phone. but still usable as a both I hope.

I am curious tho as to how the new "Q" phone from verizon will work. It looks pretty nice and i'm starting to notice how bulky the treo is compared to it

MacPCS
05-24-2006, 02:03 PM
the treo may be more bulky, but it has 4x the memory, full-size SD card support, a larger screen physically, a better OS and higher res screen (700p) so... that's why :)

the Q is a pretty good deal though.

also does the Q even vibrate?

With some hacks the phone can be pretty good. There are hacks to make the KEYPAD bigger and colorfull. There is a hack to make the screen brighter all the time. A hack to set contacts, speed dials, missed calls to the directional pad. So people can stop haten the 6700 or find something else that's a legitmate issue.

Link for Vibrating Phone Keys (http://www.sprintusers.com/forum/showpost.php?p=1039538&postcount=22). Gives tactile feedback to dialing on 6700.

Also, for the record I find the phone function on the 6700 better than the 650. The 650 gets better after a $20 program called TAKEPhone. Of course, after half dozen or so $20 programs the Treo does become a "smart".

Dialing into voicemail is a pain with the 6700 also. You can make calls without pulling the stylus but if you need to enter numbers during the call then you got to pull it. If there is another way I didn't learn it.

The 6700 isn't crap its just crapola as a phone. Poor reception was a problem when I was traveling yesterday. Can't hear very well through the earpeice. The Moto HS850 BT set was horrible with it. It doesn't matter, I'm back with the 9000 and very happy.

Just FYI, I posted the free Speed Dial app in the programs thread. In there you can have the "VoiceMail" speed dial on your today screen. You just move the cursor over it and click.

thats the one thing i like about the treo, there is a defined area for the numbers, instead of the top row. but the lack of EVDO (on the 650) is no bueno. and the 700 pricetag is :ohcrap: however. if there is another 6700 contest for the 700. i will go like hell to win it. and more than gladly give my 6700 fully tweaked to the second place person!!!

I'll probably give the 550 a 24 hour test run like the 960. :hee: If you use the web a lot on the 6700 I think it will be hard to go from a huge display to downgrade to a small display.

I hope someday Sanyo comes out with a 9100 with a different design, bluetooh, 7400 hinge, clear earpiece, more than 9 speed dials, better indoor camera and a more compact design, then I might think about giving up my 6700.

I really haven't taken to many picutres with the 6700. I'm sure I can take better pictures than these. If a few of the same lowight pictures were taken with the 9000 they would look a lot more grainy. Also remember some pictures are full size which effects the sharpness on any camera phone. I'm pretty sure the 6700 video camera is better than the 9000 but don't feel like checking.

I want a phone that I can just throw in my pocket without it pulling my shorts down.lol Also I don't like how dust gets all over the screen and I don't want to worry about breaking the display. I ordered the LG 550 today and if I don't like it I might go back to a 9000 if I find a good deal on one, even though just last week I said I would'nt go back to that phone.

Another thing that I didn't like about the 6700 is that I couldn't find any cases that I liked and the battery was just ok. Today was a expensive day buying cell phones but I probably return either the 550 or the 700p after a week of testing them both out.
