Sprint Buys Virgin Mobile

By: Juan July 28th, 2009

Sprint has decided to expand its prepaid mobile services, as it signed a $483 million deal on Tuesday to acquire Virgin Mobile. The move adds 5 million subscribers to its previously held 49 million. Sprint sees the prepaid market as a more lucritive one in today’s economy, as well as a way to introduce new customers to the Sprint brand.

Though Virgin Mobile will be owned by Sprint Nextel, it will keep its name and remain seperate from Sprint’s existing Boost Mobile brand. The two brands use different Sprint networks and different phone models (Virgin uses Kyocera and Samsung phones on Sprint’s 3G CDMA network, Boost uses Motorola phones on Sprint’s iDEN network).
